Description: Three volumes, large quartos, modern quarter cloth, marbled boards, morocco gilt lettering pieces, usual scattered foxing throughout, lower corners with light waterstain, neat stamp of Aspley House on titles, good sound set, with volume 2 dated 1827 and volume 3 dated 1832 as proper for the first editions. This formed Southey's second major historical work, and also his final one. The first was his History of Brazil, also in three volumes, and also taking a period of 9 years to publish. Description: Type: Z A super three volume set by the poet laureate of 1823. Bound uniformly in full leather with 5 bands to the spine. All volumes have been rebacked, with the original binders small sticker - L. Wilson to the head of the front end papers. Gilt embossed lettering to the spines. Marbled end papers and fore edges. The spines are a slightly lighter brown colour than the boards. Some rubbing to the board corners and board edges, with a little loss of the leather covering in places,including in a few short strips across the boards, for no longer than 5 cm in length - which includes a little loss of the associated gilt border on the boards. There is the occasional foxspot scattered to the odd page - with some foxing also to the title page of volume I. All volumes have a fresh, clean and tight textblock. A very good three volume set.
