Compiled from the letters, journals, and official documents of Sir Hudson Lowe, an Anglo-Irish soldier that was serving as the Governor of St. Helena during Napoleon's exile.Complete in three volumes.The first edition of this work.Written and edited by William Forsyth.Containing an engraved frontispiece to each volume, and a large folding map of the island of St. Helena to the rear of Volume I. Collated and complete. In the publisher's original embossed cloth binding. Externally, some general shelf wear to the boards and fading to the front board of Volume II. Spines are faded, and there is bumping to the head and tail of the spines and extremities. Internally, hinges strained to Volumes I and II. Frontispiece to Volume I is detached but present. Description: Three Volumes (octavo); size of bindings: 5 ½ in. x 8 ½ in., Vol. 1: frontispiece of Hudson Lowe (penciled note present, small damp stain); xii, 495 pp., with folding map of St. Helena (edges show some tanning, light wear); Vol. 2: frontispiece of Longwood; iv, 490 pp.; Vol. 3: frontispiece of Longwood; vi, 529 pp. Frontispieces show some age-related tanning and damp-spotting. Bound in quarter, plum-colored calf spine and sides & corner-pieces; spines with five raised bands, and two dark brown morocco leather title & volume number label;, gilt titling and bands; with gilt borders along the sides & corner-pieces, and marbled paper-covered boards, red sprinkled edges, tan endpapers, dark blue silk bookmarkers bound in. The purple dye has completely faded on the spines to brown. Some abrasions are present on the leather corner-pieces and sides; rubbing to outer covers, and some edge wear. In Volume 1; pp. iv.-176 the margins show various, penciled notes, commenting on things relating to 1815-16 period, in light of things taking place during 1855-66; some of these notes have unfortunately, been trimmed away when this set was quarter-bound; some light age tanning to page margins. Overall, a fairly well-preserved set; the writer of the annotations has not been identified, but seems to have had been quite opinionated, and might have had some military background or memories of the period covered, as well as the then current Crimean War. Weight: 6 lbs. Postage is extra on this item.
