Description: Mit Titelblatt und 110 handkolorierten Tafeln in Lithographie. Ohne Textseiten, ohne Inhaltsverzeichnis. Die Tafeln zeigen ca. zur Hälfte Vögel, zur anderen Hälfte ca. Vogeleier. Die Tafeln lose zusammen in einem goldgeprägten illustrierten OPappband, Klein4° ( 26 x 18 cm ). Der Einband von schlechter Erhaltung: Berieben, Ecken und Kanten sind bestoßen, der schmale Einbandrücken teils fehlend, Bindung defekt, Titelblatt und Tafeln jeweils lose inliegend. Die schönen Tafeln teils gering gebräunt, teils gering fleckig sowie jeweils mit Randläsionen und zu den Ecken hin teils gering eselsohrig. Wahrscheinlich mit diesen 110 Tafeln vollständig. Without text pages, without table of contents. Half of the plates show birds, the other half show bird eggs. The plates loosely bound together in a gilt-stamped illustrated paperback, small 4° ( 26 x 18 cm ). The binding in poor condition: rubbed, corners and edges bumped, the narrow spine partly missing, binding defective, title page and plates each loose. The beautiful plates partly slightly browned, partly slightly stained and each with marginal lesions and partly slightly dog-eared towards the corners. Probably complete with these 110 plates. Mit 34 ( von 39 ) handkolorierten Tafeln in Lithographie sowie 11kolorierten Tafeln mit Vogeleiern. Illustrierter goldgeprägter violetter Oln mit schöner Einbandvignette, , 4° ( 26 x 19 cm ). Der Einband ist berieben, etwas fleckig und gebräunt, Ecken und Kanten sind bestoßen. Der schmale Einbandrücken ist zum unteren Kapital hin angeplatzt sowie am oberen Kapital etwas ausgefranst, die Bindung ist gelockert. Innen ein etwas unleserlicher alter Besitzvermerk oben auf dem Titelblatt, datiert 22. November 1885, from Momma*. Das Papier innen ist zeitbedingt leicht gebräunt, wenige Seiten sind gering fleckig. The narrow spine is chipped towards the lower capital and somewhat frayed at the upper capital, the binding is loose. Inside a somewhat illegible old ownership note at the top of the title page, dated 22 November 1885, from Momma*. The paper inside is slightly browned due to the period, a few pages are slightly stained. The coloured plates in good condition. ( Please note: 5 plates are missing ( Wall creeper / Yellow headed Wagtail / Black Lark / Black headed Bunting / Yellow-browed Bunting ) if the plates with the eggs are complete is unfortunately not known ). Description: Pp. ix, (3) 150; iv, 172; iv, 176; iv, 180; (4), 175, (3), with 253 fine hand-colored plates by Fawcett, some text-figures. Publisher’s original elaborately blind-stamped and gilt-decorated wine-red cloth with large gilt scene of birds and title on the front covers, sm 4to (7 x 10 1/2 inches). Zimmer (p. 87) states: "Principally an account of the habits of non-British European birds, with brief descriptions and synonymy, forming a sort of sequel to Morris's 'History of British Birds,' 1870". Casey Wood (p. 254) observes "This admirable descriptive treatise furnishes the synonymy, generic characters, distribution, and habits of those birds of Europe seen outside the British Isles." The hand-colored plates are by Fawcett with many illustrations of eggs. No ownership marks. Faint edge wear to cloth, a bright and clean copy in near fine condition.

Description: A good set of the 5 volume second edition in the original decorative cloth binding. With 252 hand coloured plates of birds and eggs. The bindings have slight fading to spines, bumping and wear to corners and are slightly shaken (most noticeable in vols III-V), but all are sound. The contents are generally in very good clean condition. There is occasional spotting - most pronounced in Vol IV. Vol I: 150 pp plus publisher's catalogue; 53 plates; small faded area to fep, small chip to spine, text and plates very clean. Vol II: 171pp plus publisher's catalogue; 53 plates; some text pages unopened, text and plates very clean. Vol III: 176pp plus publisher's catalogue; 50 plates; some text pages unopened, a little brown spotting. Vol IV: 180pp plus publisher's catalogue; 51 plates; some spotting - noticeable on around 8 plates. Vol V: 175pp inlcuding list of European Birds and index, with publisher's catalogue; 45 plates; a little light spotting but generally clean. A nice set.

Con 253 tavole in fine coloritura originale di cui 190 di uccelli, 62 raffiguranti uova di varie specie ed una tavola in nero posta fra le pp. 92-93 del primo volume. Legatura editoriale in piena tela con decorazioni a secco e belle immagini in oro ai piatti. Solo i dorsi appena un po' schiariti. Bell'esemplare, fresco, marginoso ed in eccellente stato di conservazione. Seconda edizione, preferibile all'originale.
