Description: Two volumes (out of four). 8vo. Contemporary full tree calf with gilt edges and gilt spines. li, 383pp; 431pp. 3 foldout maps and 1 foldout plate, marbled endpapers. Very good overall. Both volumes slightly splayed; spines a tad rough and tree calf shows sporadic fine crazing; contemporary ownership signature on inner flyleaf of each volume. Hinges tight and unrestored. First two volumes (out of four) of the eleventh edition, tight and attractive, of this popular survey, first published in London in 1777 and not published in the U.S. until 1798. Howes calls it the "Most highly regarded secondary source of its time; now entirely superseded." Despite a bit of inoffensive wear, a lovely set of this classic. NEW HOWES R 359 note.
