Bound in fine contemporary polished tree calf, flat spines elaborately gilt in compartments with arches, swirling foliage, and central eight-pointed star ornaments; red spine labels gilt with volume number in small circular label with volume numbers in gilt. A trifle foxed in text, joints and spines a little rubbed but a nice, near fine set. An important history according to DNB "one of the first successful attempts in England at historical generalisation on the basis of large accumulation of facts." A very handsome set.
