Gouan, Antoine. HISTOIRE DES POISSONS, Contenant La Description Anatomique De Leurs Parties Externes & Internes, & Le Caractere Des Divers Genres Ranges Par Classes & Par Ordres.. Chez Amand Konig, Strasburg, 1770.

Price: US$300.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Quarter leather and paterned boards. Spine with five raised bands. Gilt title to one compartment. Title and text with facing pages of Latin and French. Separately paginated. Illustrated with four engraved folding plates that appear within the text. Plate 2 appears before plate 1 but all four all present. Oddly the front and rear boards have some writing that appears to be French that nearly covers the boards. It seems to be bound from a larger sheet that contained the writing as it even appears to the turn-ins, front and rear. It is in a similar color as the boards so does not detract too much. There is a large piece of this paper covering the rear board that is missing near the spine. Foxing to the endpapers; other foxing, largely very light, does appear within the text. Wear along the spine and board edges. Corners bumped. Interior is very tight. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 252 pages

GOUAN, Antoine. Histoire de poissons contenant la dà scription anatomique de leurs parties externes et internes, & le caractere des divers genres rangàs pas classe et par ordres. Amand Konig, Strasbourg, 1770.

Price: US$850.00 + shipping

Description: With 4 folding engraved plates. Contemporary paper-covered boards, rebacked; a fine copy. First edition of this very interesting work on the anatomy of fishes, in Latin and French on opposite pages. Gouan's history basically consists of full anatomical descriptions, with engravings by Weiss from Gouan's illustrations. Of particular interest are his remarkable observations on muscular movement. The descriptive classification of fish were probably intended as an introduction to a true general natural history of ichthyology. The book was quite popular both in France and following its translation into German. Goüan (1733-1821), a physician and professor of botany at Montpellier, was one of the first proponents in France of Linnaeus' methods and nomenclature. As a strict follower of the Linnaean school he only paid attention to exterior characters. According to Pietsch, it should be noted that the anatomy he gives includes a myology rather new for the time.
