Condition: Near Fine

Description: Quarto, 58pp. First separate edition of this short story, which first appeared in the Partisan Review in 1986. A crisp, clean copy, very near fine, with a tiny smudge at the top edge, and the spine just a tinge cocked and faded. In the publisher's slipcase, fine. This is number 58 of 195 limited copies SIGNED by Roth on the limitation page. A very nicely produced edition. This copy with a typed letter from publisher Barnard Taylor to an old friend. The letter, of 35 lines, discusses in significant detail the origins of this book. Taylor notes that the woman in the story is based on Roth's first wife. He adds: "She had problems, of course, but Roth can be difficult to live with as see his divorce from Claire Bloom! Who would leave Claire for God's Sake!!! (emphasis original)" He goes on to discuss the finances of the press, which has a large gross income and a miniscule profit; very typical for high-quality fine press publishing. A handsome copy of this volume, with a meaningful letter from the publisher, which sheds light on publication.

Condition: Fine

Description: A fine press limited edition of a story that first appeared in The Partisan Review in 1986. Copy No. 138 of 195 numbered copies, signed by the author. An uncommon edition: although the stated limitation was 195, the press was selling unbound copies a couple of years after the initial publication date, suggesting that not all of the sets of sheets were bound. Fine in quarter leather, burgundy cloth boards, in a fine slipcase. The nicest edition done of one of Roth's works. Unless otherwise noted, our first editions are first printings.
