Description: First edition. Octavo. 275pp. Contemporary gift inscription on the front fly, hinges slightly started and moderate rubbing at the spine, a solid, very good copy. When encountered, this cheaply produced children's book is generally found with the lettering and painted pictorial cover pretty well worn. This is a considerably better than usual copy, lacking the rare dustwrapper. The very scarce, pseudonymous first book by the first American author to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, printed in an edition of only 1000 copies.

First edition, one of only 1,000 copies printed and one of only two copies surviving in dust jacket. Octavo (7 3/8 x 5 inches; 187 x 128 mm). [xii], 1-275 pp. With color frontispiece and three illustrations inserted. Original light grey cloth, decoratively stamped in orange and dark blue on front board and spine, dust jacket. Jacket is chipped at spine extremities and corners, with one chip at upper front panel and upper rear panel, a tear to lower front panel. Extremities rubbed, with some light soiling. Cloth spine slightly rubbed at extremities, some light foxing to endleaves, p. 149 somewhat soiled, p. 152's upper corner is dog-eared due to publisher's improperly cut corner, slight tear to p. 243. Still, a fine copy of this incredible rarity. Housed in full morocco clamshell case. According to Sinclair Lewis bibliographer Steve Pastore, there are only two copies extant of this book in jacket (he uses this very copy for photography and reference in his bibliography).
