Price: US$750.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Hardcover. 8vo. Random House, New York. 1967. 278 pgs. First Edition/First Printing. DJ has shelf-wear present to the DJ extremities (closed tears present to the front panel along the front flap, small chip present to the crown of the DJ spine). Previous owner's stamp present to the FFEP. Text is clean and free of marks, binding tight and solid, boards clean with no wear present. "California, Labor Day weekend . . . Early, with ocean fog still in the streets, outlaw motorcyclists wearing chains, shades and greasy Levis roll out from damp garages, all-night diners and cast-off one-night pads in Frisco, Hollywood, Berdoo and East Oakland, heading for the Monterey peninsula, north of Big Sur. . . The Menace is loose again. " Thus begins Hunter S. Thompson’s vivid account of his experiences with California’s most notorious motorcycle gang, the Hell’s Angels. In the mid-1960s, Thompson spent almost two years living with the controversial Angels, cycling up and down the coast, reveling in the anarchic spirit of their clan, and, as befits their name, raising hell. His book successfully captures a singular moment in American history, when the biker lifestyle was first defined, and when such countercultural movements were electrifying and horrifying America. Thompson, the creator of Gonzo journalism, writes with his usual bravado, energy, and brutal honesty, and with a nuanced and incisive eye; as The New Yorker pointed out, "For all its uninhibited and sardonic humor, Thompson’s book is a thoughtful piece of work. " As illuminating now as when originally published in 1967, Hell’s Angels is a gripping portrait, and the best account we have of the truth behind an American legend. E-170; 8vo 8" - 9" tall

Inscribed and writ large by former Hells Angels president Sonny Barger: "To Caroline[?] with love 'Sonny' Barger." The author's first book, perhaps the inaugural effort of the new participatory journalism. A crummy copy.

Condition: Fine

Description: RARE FIRST UK EDITION in overall NEAR FINE condition. HARDCOVER copy with unclipped DUSTJACKET. A true rarity. The first UK edition is a lot scarcer than the first US edition, both which were published in 1967 (copyright page of this first UK edition notes: "Copyright Hunter S. Thompson 1966, 1967. First published in the USA by Random House, 1966. First published in Great Britain, 1967"). Apparently, according to well-respected American rare book dealer Ken Lopez, "Thompson at one point thought that the British edition had only been issued in paperback, as he had never seen a hardcover copy of it". Hell's Angels was Hunter S. Thompson's first published book. It was the book that launched his career as a writer. Front cover blurb: "The California motorcycle gang. The real life Wild Ones". From inner front flap of dustjacket (in full): "The Angels are a Californian motor-cycle gang that rides the highways in packs. They may be high on beer, wine, marijuana or LSD. They are armed and they are provoked easily. It is sometimes difficult to say whether their sexual activities are orgy or gang rape. The Press and television wait for them to descend on and terrorize some resort town and the tourists gather to watch. Hunter Thompson rode with the Hell's Angels and lived uneasily with them until one day they grew bored with him and casually beat him up. He discounts conventional explanations of youthful rebellion: 'The Hell's Angels are a logical product of the culture that now claims to be shocked at their existence - They are acting out the daydreams of millions of losers.' This is not so much a sociological study as an encounter with one of the most anti-social groups in society. It is an encounter that forces one to take sides. The Hell's Angels are 'the first wave of a future that nothing in our history has prepared us to cope with'. They have rejected every rule and standard of society just as they have been defeated by its competition. If they have to lose we may all have to lose for, as Dr Johnson said, 'He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of being a man'." Printed in Great Britain by Latimer Trend & Co., Plymouth. Bound in original black boards with bright silver skeleton-head motorbike-rider design to front board, backed by pale blue cloth spine with bright red title lettering & publisher's logo in black at foot, top edge of book block grey, plain grey endpapers, in publisher's unclipped black-and-silver pictorial dustjacket, retaining the original published price of "42s. net" on inner front flap. With author's b&w photograph to rear panel of dustjacket. Mild overall slight rubbing to dustjacket, a bare trace of edgewear to dustjacket, very faint ghosting of (removed) price-sticker over original printed price on inner front flap, otherwise overall a very nice clean tight solid hardcover copy. The book itself is FINE with no flaws. The dustjacket is now protected in removable clear Bro-dart cover. 281pp. A remarkably superb collectible copy of the extremely scarce first UK edition. RARE.
