Two complete novels in one book: 'He Knew He Was Right' by Anthony Trollope and 'Man And Wife' by Wilkie Collins. Trollope story dated 1869 on title page; Collins story dated 1870 on title page. Each story illustrated with in-text images. Each printed in double column in quite small print. Possibly the two novels were bound together by a reader at an early date--the book spine identifies the contents only as 'NOVELS.' Collins story title page with two large tears; book with moderate edge wear; marbled paper rubbed. VERY GOOD

Binding is lightly worn, with some significant sun-fading to the spine and front cover, as though there were another smaller volume laying on top for a period of time. Interior is clean and free of stray markings, save for some minor foxing and a small tear at a lower corner of the frontispiece and a previous owner's name inked in on the first free end-paper, dated December 1879. Overall, this is a good copy.

Description: This hardcover book is square and tight. The boards and spine have no wear with pristine lettering. The pages and endpages are clean, with mild expected toning. There are no markings or folds. Not ex-lib. No remainder mark. This copy has contemporary marbled green paper boards with new green leather spine and old tips. There is a new gilt-stamped black leather spine label and four spine bands. There is slight wear to the corners and edges. The binding is tight and the book is Fine, overall. The b/w illustrations are by Marcus Stone. The caption title for part 2 is present as issued. The inner board has a book plate for Richard Ashhurst, a Philadelphia merchant and art collector. Scarce.
