Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Guy Fawkes, Captain Kidd, Dick Turpin, Burke & Hare are the legends discussed in this entertaining and very readable book. There is a quite different picture of Robin Hood than that portrayed in the movies, the story-lines for which have obviously been put together from a variety of different, true or untrue, incidents recorded over the years; Dick Whittington did turn again and return to London to become a popular Lord Mayor, complete with cat; Guy Fawkes was perhaps a fall guy for more important people involved in the Gunpowder Plot; Captain Kidd was once an honourable naval officer before becoming a pirate; Dick Turpin perhaps never rode Black Bess to York, despite William Harrison Ainsworth's assertion in Rookwood; Burke was arguably the unlucky resurrection man as he was hanged whilst Hare got away with it, only to suffer punishment from work colleagues in later life in London. All in all a very interesting and informative read, and well written too. Ref OO5

Condition: Very Good

Description: Cover has some light edge and corner wear. Signed and inscribed by author inside front cover. ; As Milton entered the water, he happened to glance up and saw me waving from the bank. He lifted his sombrero, pressed it to his breast, and bowed; then he kissed his hand and called,'Adios, chiquita, bonita Estrelita!' I cherished this memory, as it turned out to be the last time I ever saw him." "Whatever order there had been in these 750 troops under Colonel Rivera was forgotten when our green and lovely village came into view. The foot soldiers and their followers broke ranks and, like a herd of famished cattle, began to run, shouting and throwing themselves into the large canals alongside the streets, hurtling over gates or tearing them off their hinges, swarming into gardens, breaking open melons and clawing out handfuls with red juice dripping, stuffing whole tomatoes into their mouths, gulping onions and radishes." "Lee turned to face the bandits. The setting sun shone on the stocky figure of the leader, on his large head with bold, sensual features, surmounted by a wide hat. The last rays of sunlight also illuminated Lee's boyish figure, and the sheen of his superb mount and trappings. A crafty smile lit the bold, black eyes appraising him. "'Aha, the young caballero! The nephew, is it not, of the Senor Webb? The Senor who fattens like a vampire on the lifeblood of poor Mexico!' His melodramatic tone changed to a bark. 'Up with your hands. We want no unpleasantness if the norteamericano youth has a gun to play with!' Villa rode around Lee, chuckling with pleasure, like a cat toying with a mouse." ; 8.8 X 5.9 X 0.5 inches; 146 pages
