Marbled Endpapers. Top page edges bright Gilt. 177 Pages + publisher's adverts. 7 1/2" Tall, 370g. Some wear to leather which has fine splits all down sides of spine. Only tiny bits of the gilt lettering remains on spine and the lower 1 1/2" of leather is missing from the bottom of the spine. No inscriptions except an old penciled price on endpaper. Pages in very good, clean condition. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall

Description: Olive drab cloth with red titles. First American edition. Part of the "English Men of Letters" series edited by John Morley. One of the first serious studies of American Literature done for the English audience. Spine ends with rubbing, front hinge cracked but still very sound, front flyleaf with a 1.0 inch closed tear on bottom edge, front cover with a smudge, light rubbing at extremities. Front flyleaf and subsequent end paper with two pin holes from a tipped in newspaper article, period owner's name in colored pencil on front blank paper. 6 pages of publisher's ads in back. Overall very good. Internally clean and tight. PayPal accepted.

Minimal external wear, with an unobtrusive strip of fading to cloth at upper front cover; titles somewhat difficult to read, as usual; still a tight, unmarked, Very Good or better copy. In the Macmillan series "English Men of Letters," under the general editorship of John Morley. A quite handsome copy of a book seldom found in nice condition (and which, to be clear, must have been somewhat plain even upon publication).
