Price: US$50.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: The first book in the series introduces boy wizard Harry Potter. We believe this to be a book club edition with the following points of issue: a full number line is followed by "8 9/9 0/0 01 02." "Printed in the U.S.A. 23" and then "First American edition, October 1998" appear below the number line. Boards are black (not embossed with the diamond pattern) with a maroon spine. Dust jacket is priced at $17.95. The bar code section on the jacket is cream with nothing printed above the smaller bar code. The dust jacket also features a Publishers Weekly review on the back cover. The lettering is not embossed and is a dull brown color on both the front cover and the spine. The spine of both the book and the dust jacket lack a "Year 1" badge. The jacket has the author's name as just "Rowling" though the book has "J.K." above "Rowling." This particular copy is in beautiful condition and is exceptionally clean with no writing, marks, underlining, or bookplates. No remainder marks. Not an ex-library copy. The spine is tight and crisp, and the corners are square. Boards are clean, flat and true with no evidence of wear. Dust jacket is not price-clipped and shows minimal edge wear but does have some bumping to the upper spine and some creasing along the top and bottom edges on the back cover. A great-looking, affordable alternative to a true first! This highly collectible, fine/near fine, book club copy is protected with an archival mylar dust jacket cover. Satisfaction guaranteed!

Condition: As New

Description: Octavo, 309 pages, black. boards, appears unread; in a mylar dj protector. The First Printing, with complete number line, in a revised state of the dust jacket with a variant of no price on the front flap, and with the numeral '1' at top of spine, and a new review from Publishers Weekly of dj. Also, the text on the lower dj flap tells of J. K. Rowling's hard times and prizes. Scholastic used the artwork of a single illustrator across the series: Mary Grandpre. To [Arthur A.] Levine this is part of the image and branding of the series. He noted ' . I have always said this is a classic book. This is a book that you remember when you're thirty-five and you remember when you were ten. And that was the book that changed your life. There's continuity there - when you see that on your shelf you think, wow this is that book .' ." - [ Errington A4(c) note - reporting 35,000 copies in the first printing]. NOTE: the first american illustrated deluxe edition, in deluxe hardback, appeared in November, 2015 - see Errington A4(i).

Price: US$70.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: States "First American edition, October 1998." Number line complete 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2. The sole blurb to jacket rear panel is that of Publisher's Weekly. No price to unclipped jacket front flap, indicating this is an early Book Club Edition. No. 1 appears to spine of jacket but NOT to spine of book. (Purple paper -- "grape"? -- spine over black paper-covered boards.) In place of the embossed yellow or gold titling of the true first printings, the "gold" jacket titling here is a flat, dull greenish hue which fades into the background. (We have lightened our scans slightly to render this titling discernible.) Jacket APPEARS near-fine, but was evidently once damp to bottom of front panel, a tidemark and some red ink transfer now visible to verso, only (not visible when the jacket is on the book.) Jacket rear panel mentions the "Smarties" prize, but no other titles in the series. "Ms. Rowling lives in Edinburgh with her daughter," and had presumably not yet begun unburdening herself of her opinions re. American politics. 309 pp. Reduced from $190.

Levine bought the US publication rights long before the Harry Potter craze took off in the UK, but it was these early American editions which marked a significant turning point in the book's history.

Rowling, J.K.. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (1st state DJ - Fine). Arthur A. Levine / Scholastic Press, New York, 1998.

Price: US$1695.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: Arthur A. Levine / Scholastic Press, New York. 1998. 309 pages. First edition stated, with numberline beginning with 2; which means this is a second printing HOWEVER, the plum here is the DJ, which is the same as the highly collectible, highly desirable first state DJ of the first printing. In addition to the DJ being the same as the first state DJ, the DJ is fine; which is a magnificent feat; as the American print run for the first printing was only 30k copies, and no one knew the author or the story at the time, so these copies were hardly preserved, as the majority of them landed in libraries, and we all know how that goes. So this first state DJ has the requisite Guardian blurb on the rear, the JK initials present at the head of the DJ spine, and properly lacks the year 1 badge at spine head. Raised, gold embossed Harry Potter name on both the spine, and the front. On the back of the dust jacket, there is a single quote on the top, from the Guardian, a paper in London, stating "Harry Potter could assume the near-legendary status of Ronald Dahl's Charlie, of chocolate factory fame." On the bottom left there is a cream/light-yellow bar code box with two bar codes in it, and the smaller bar code states "51695". This highly sought after first state DJ is fine; the only thing keeping the DJ from 'as-new' status is the $16.95 price has been neatly clipped from the top of the DJ flap. The book itself is equally as attractive. Purple diamond-embossed boards quarter-bound in red cloth with the author's initials, JK, present at the head of the spine, while properly lacking the Year 1 badge. Book is tight. Binding and hinges are sound. Panel boards and endpapers are bright and clean. No writing within. A fine/fine copy of the first American edition, second printing in a most desirable, rare, fine, fist state DJ, which has all of the requisite points of the coveted first state, first printing DJ.

Rowling, J. K. (The First Harry Potter Book signed). Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Arthur A. Levine / Scholastic Press, New York, 1998.

Price: US$2500.00 + shipping

Description: Handsomely bound in finely woven quarter brick red cloth spine stamped brightly in gold. And purple paper-covered boards with a diamond pattern. Clean and tight throughout. In a complete, very crisp later issue dust jacket priced at $19.95 and has the "Year 1" at the top of the spine. Boldly signed by "J.K. Rowling" on the title page in sharpie. According to Rowling, the idea for both the Harry Potter books and its eponymous character came while waiting for a delayed train from Manchester, England to London in 1990. She stated that the idea of "this scrawny, black-haired, bespectacled boy who didn't know he was a wizard became more and more real to me".[2] While developing the ideas for her book, she also decided to make Harry an orphan who attended a boarding school called Hogwarts. She explained in a 1999 interview with The Guardian: "Harry had to be an orphan—so that he's a free agent, with no fear of letting down his parents, disappointing them. Hogwarts has to be a boarding school—half the important stuff happens at night! Then there's the security. Having a child of my own reinforces my belief that children above all want security, and that's what Hogwarts offers Harry."[3]Her own mother's death on 30 December 1990 inspired Rowling to write Harry as a boy longing for his dead parents, his anguish becoming "much deeper, much more real" than in earlier drafts because she related to it herself.[2] In a 2000 interview with The Guardian, Rowling also established that the character of Wart in T. H. White's novel The Once and Future King is "Harry's spiritual ancestor".[4] Finally, she established Harry's birth date as 31 July, the same as her own. However, she maintained that Harry was not directly based on any real-life person: "he came just out of a part of me".[5]Rowling has also maintained that Harry is a suitable real-life role model for children. "The advantage of a fictional hero or heroine is that you can know them better than you can know a living hero, many of whom you would never meet. if people like Harry and identify with him, I am pleased, because I think he is very likeable." (Wikipedia) Later printing: 22nd edition of the first printing with 22 the lowest number on the line.

"The advantage of a fictional hero or heroine is that you can know them better than you can know a living hero, many of whom you would never meet. if people like Harry and identify with him, I am pleased, because I think he is very likeable." Condition: Near Fine

Description: First American edition, second printing of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (the USA-adapted title of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone"), signed in October 1998 by J.K. Rowling on the verso of the half-title page. The book was signed during Rowling's first American visit, during which she met only around 100-200 people. This situation would change drastically the following year for her second American tour, after the Harry Potter hype had taken off. Signed American editions with a 1998 signature are therefore extremely rare. Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity (LoA) from Adam Houston (TheHarryPotterSpecialist), the world's sole J.K. Rowling signature expert and an informative collector's card that provides additional details. The book is in near fine, unread condition with bumped spine ends, minor scratches on some page edges, and, inconspicuously due to the use of a black pen on a green background, the previous owner's name on the first free endpaper. The first-state dust jacket, featuring a review from The Guardian on the rear panel, is also in near fine condition. The jacket is slightly wrinkled at the spine ends but without fading or noticeable wear. A highly collectible early signed Harry Potter book.
