Condition: Fair

Description: Ex-public library. Red cloth boards with plain endpapers. [iv] + 343pp + 43 [out of 44]pp catalogue. The binding is tight but between-section cracking has forced it out of square. There are the unsightly remains of a large yellow library label at the top of the upper board. The corners and edges are very rubbed. The boards and spine have been imperfectly repaired. The leaf bearing pp. 31/2 has been bound in, presumably at a later date, between pp. 80 and 81 and has a chip with small loss at the outer edge. The spine cover is faded and the gilt lettering barely legible. The front endpaper is clean and has no ownership markings but there are identical library numbers inked to both faces. The last catalogue leaf (p. 44) is affixed to the rear pastedown. The title page has a library stamp and handwritten and stamped numbers. There are no other markings but for small brown stains (not foxing) on many of the pages. This copy would benefit from professional restoration. This is the true first UNILLUSTRATED edition which is very rare.
