Description: First edition with Robinsons illustrations (Duckworth, 1913). Purple cloth with lettering and decoration in gilt. Pictorial endpapers. Featuring 12 colour plates mounted under captioned tissue guards a few of which with one or two light creases and a number of attractive line drawings. Some toning and spotting to edges and browning to front and rear endpapers. The covers are in very nice bright condition. A very good copy indeed, accompanied by remnants of the rare original dust jacket.

Description: A good copy of the limited edition in gilt-decorated parchment binding with tipped-in frontispiece and 11 further tipped-in plates by Charles Robinson. This copy is number 241 of 260 copies of which 250 were for sale. The binding has a browned spine, and a lot of browning and scuffing to edges with some loss of surface at the front corners and the top back corner. There is some marking to the front board. Internally the decorative endpapers are present without inscription. The contents, including numerous designs and line illustrations by Charles Robinson are in good to very good clean condition. There are lightly creased tissue guards to plates at pp 26 and 68 and the tissue guards to plates at pp 76 and 122 have some wrinkling and browning. The mount to the plate at p76 has a slight ripple at the top. Page 47 has a turned corner tip and there is a small repaired edge tear to the bottom margin of p 54. Description: Signed limited edition, number 62 of 260 copies signed by the illustrator. This was the only signed limited edition of Charles Robinson's work. Wilde's collection of children's stories, first published in 1888, comprises "The Happy Prince", "The Nightingale and the Rose", "The Selfish Giant", "The Devoted Friend", and "The Remarkable Rocket". Wilde's "reputation as an author dated from the publication of The Happy Prince and Other Tales in London in May 1888. The Athenaeum compared him to Hans Christian Andersen, and Pater wrote to say that 'The Selfish Giant' was 'perfect in its kind,' and the whole book written in 'pure English' - a wonderful compliment" (Ellmann). Robinson's style perfectly fits Wilde's tone: "very decorative, flowing and imaginative scenes were surrounded by elaborate borders and in the faces and forms of his children he recaptured something of the innocence of childhood. his colouring and fantasy are often highly original" (Houfe). Colour frontispiece and 11 colour plates, with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, by Robinson. Some minor browning to free endpapers, minor creasing to a few tissue guards: a near-fine copy.
