Description: The author, Sir Alfred Pease, Bart, a gentleman hunter/horseman devoted to fox hunting, then popular among the landed gentry and the nobility, was also a versatile sports enthusiast and author. His book covers the period from 1857 to 1909 and is largely based on a series of 42 articles he wrote for "The Field" in 1931. In his preface Sir Alfred said the purpose of the book was to give an "unadorned account of a variety of experiences." In much of the early part of the book the main theme is rhe hounds, horses and their riders and the foxes. However, through the chapters (39 of them) are interesting and enlightening passages from life, apart from sport, for the landed gentry, with Sir Arthur also involved in politics, horse racing, winter sports in the Swiss Alps, polo, the advent of the motor car and wealthy society in generallv. The final chapters concern the Bart's expeditions to South Africa, Algeria, Tunisia The Sahara, Somalia Land, India and Kenia (sic). There are occasions of name dropping by the Bart --- the Duke of Beaufort, Charles Rothschild, Lords and Ladies galore for example, and former US President, Colonel Theodore Roosevelt who Sir Alfred entertained on a visit to Kenia in 1909. The Colonel had intimated he could only spare three days for lion hunting with Sir Alfred, but extended his stay to thee weeks, taking a lage bag of African game animals in that time. Many of today's sports are reckoned to be dangerous, but those at the time covered here were down-right hazardous with death and injury while following the hounds just part of the sport, but pioneer snow sports in Switzerland 1897 had an extensive casualty list for only a few a days, as outlined by Sir Al;fred as including two broken arms, one victim with broken ribs, shoulder and hip, one skier crashing though spectators "knocking down four ladies, who were nearly killed as well as himself. " One of the casualties had "a leg pulverized at the knee." The Bart observed that he "came away from St Moritz feeling one was much safer hunting at home than at that place,'' Sir Alfred's experiences make for great reading with its reflections to the society in which he lived as well as sports he enjoyed and the travels he undertook in what some might describe as "the good old days!" First edition of 1932 from John Lane, The Bodly Head, 301 pages including index folliowed by two pages publisher's adverts, this copy being ex-Dunedin Public Library. Green hard covers with light green front and spine titles are G+ with wear upper and lower front hinge and approx half the cloth at lower rear hinge worn through, light bruising to spine extremities, corners bumped, library code at spine base, while both boards remain firmly attached. Library markings etc consist adhesion residue from pocket on front pastedown, small label with library codes top corner, library sale stamp on FFEP, library stamp on half-title, frontis and title page which also has the embossed library seal lower corner, the stamp re-appears on several of the preliminary pages, while through the text block the stamp appears only on the illustrations plates, where it has been applied judiciously to avoid impinging the image. The illustrations are a photo frontis, 15 b/w plates through text, mostly photos, some art and one humorous drawing. Internally the book is excellent. No inscriptions.
