Description: Green cloth binding. Page edges untrimmed. Browning and light foxing to page edges. Small torn section to front pastedown endpaper. Good solid binding. A flower has been pressed between pages 56 & 57 causing slight browning. A few lightly pencilled margin markings, text is otherwise very clean throughout. Previous owner's pencilled inscription to front free endpaper: 'Clara Jewesbury, Xmas 1869. Bydand Animo non Astutia.' Tucked into the book is a lock of golden hair, perhaps Clara's. Description: VG+. Oversized folio (12 1/2 x 16 1/2 in.), 3 volumes, 1st thus. Full calf bindings, hubbed spines, covers and spine compartments stamped in gilt, all edges gilt. A full set of the first illustrated edition of Tennyson's Idylls of the King cycle: Vivien and Guinevere, Elaine, and Enid. All 3 volumes in full burgundy calf, expertly rebacked in matching leather, with 9 of the storied illustrator Gustave Dore's steel engravings per book, 18 in Vivien. Guinevere, and 9 each in Elaine and Enid. Modest corner and shelfwear, slight dust-dulling and wear to the gilt, some staining, smudging and inscriptions and former owner's bookplates on the endpapers, but the texts are markedly clean, with very mild browning, and overall very tight, bright, and solid. A handsome set of a magnificent edition, beautifully restored and preserved. This large, heavy set will require substantial additional shipping.
