Ernest Hemingway. Green Hills of Africa. Charles Scribner's Sons, 1935.

Price: US$100.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: True 1st printing with letter "A" and Scribner's seal on the copyright page. An altogether decent copy, lacking the dustjacket and from the American Merchant Marine Library Association. Bears 3 inoffensive stamps stating such - two on the endpapers and one on the full title page. Oddly, there may be evidence here that this was removed from said library in the year of publication, owing to a short and neat gift dedication also on the front free endpaper which is dated 1935. Besides those, no marks to interior, which is clean and with a bit of age toning. Small bit of soiling to the rear free endpaper. Binding is sturdy, though the rear gutter is starting, about 3" along the seam from the top and about 2" up from the bottom, still very well intact. Moisture stain to covers at front and back boards, not to be found at interior of the book at all. Cloth on spine is darkened from tobacco smoke and there is a faint but negligible odor. Some offset toning to the front board, where the authors name is still bright in gilt. Small brown stain a few inches below gilt. Softening to cloth at crown and foot of spine, with a teeny bit of loss each, but overall solid. Some wear to cloth at the bottom edges of the boards and some wear at the corner tips. Somewhat rubbed at the corner tips of the pages visible from the outer block only. A decent overall copy.

Price: US$329.95 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: May - November, 1935, all complete in original wraps, light general wear and soiling at issues, spines intact except October issue, which shows minor chipping, library blind stamps noted at most issues, no other library markings noted, August issue has skinning at front wrap, and a black ink library stamp, October issue has been repaired along spine, discrete repairs noted at spine ends of November issue; overall a nice set. The book would be released by Scribner's in September, 1935. From the Foreword, "Unlike many novels, none of the characters or incidents in this book is imaginary. Anyone not finding sufficient love interest is at liberty, while reading it, to insert whatever love interest he or she may have at the time. The writer has attempted to write an absolutely true book to see whether the shape of a country and the pattern of a month's action can, if truly presented, compete with a work of the imagination." Complete sets of this "non-fiction novel" in its original magazine format have gotten quite difficult to assemble. Illustrated with decorations by Shenton. See Hanneman C231.

Hemingway, Ernest. Green Hills of Africa.. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1935.

Price: US$1400.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of Hemingway's second work of nonfiction, an account of a month on safari he and his wife took in East Africa during December 1933. Octavo, original green cloth, decorations by Edward Shenton. Near fine in a bright very good dust jacket. Green Hills of Africa was published in 1935, but initially appeared in Scribners Magazine the same year (Meyers, 1985). The first edition explains that Hemingway "attempted to write an absolutely true book to see whether the shape of a country and the pattern of a month's action can, if truly presented, compete with a work of the imagination." The author's intentions were quickly confirmed when the first print-run sold a popular 10,500 copies, and it was aptly praised by The New York Times as "[a] fine book on death in the African afternoon. The writing is the thing; that way he has of getting down with beautiful precision the exact way things look, smell, taste, feel, sound." Not unlike Hemingway's virtuosic abilities, Green Hills of Africa also offers the writer's opinions on the value of his contemporaries: "The good American writers are Henry James, Stephen Crane, and Mark Twain Henry James wanted to make money. He never did, of course." Hemingway adds that most American writers are inadequate and "came to a bad end" The value of Green Hills of Africa, therefore, is three-fold. It serves as masterly written entertainment, a successful social experiment that tested the receptivity of the American public, and an insight into the author's literary evaluation. The Observer is correct when it wrote, "If he were never to write again, his name would live as long as the English language, for Green Hills of Africa takes its place beside his other works on that small shelf in our libraries which we reserve for the classics."

Description: [295] pp. When published in 1935, The New York Times called Green Hills of Africa, The best-written story of big-game hunting anywhere, Hemingway's evocative account of his safari through East Africa with his wife, Pauline Pfeiffer, captures his fascination with big-game hunting. In examining the grace of the chase and the ferocity of the kill, Hemingway looks inward, seeking to explain the lure of the hunt and the primal undercurrent that comes alive on the plains of Africa. Green Hills of Africa is also an impassioned portrait of the glory of the African landscape and the beauty of a wilderness that was, even then, being threatened by the incursions of man.

Hemingway, Ernest. Green Hills of Africa.. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1935.

Price: US$2500.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of Hemingway's second work of nonfiction, an account of a month on safari he and his wife took in East Africa during December 1933. Octavo, original green cloth, decorations by Edward Shenton. Near fine in a bright very good dust jacket. A nice example.
