Description: This is number 412 of limited signed edition of this colossal work-an account of the distribution, habits, and natural history of the sporting mammals with personal hunting experiences, 25 separate contributors, 15 hand-coloured plates and numerous photogravure illustrations. it is bound in green cloth with gilt lettering. the spine is a bit worn top and bottom and the shoulders are worn with small loss and the first few pages are detached. Binding is cocked.The rear hinge is completely detached. There are tears and small loss to contents page. Other page edges are slightly torn. Endpapers are worn and stained and the rear has loss. This book is extremely heavy, please enquire about postage the rest of the interior is in good condition however and is clean and unmarked.; 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall; Signed by Author Fair

Modern half-leather and cloth over boards, title stamped in gilt onto spine, large 4to size (11-5/8 inches tall), pp. [i]-xx, [1]-612, illustrated w. fifteen hand-colored plates, 55 photogravure text illustrations, tables, index. Volume w. a touch of sun to spine and very occasional soil to text, varying amounts of modest browning to color plates and captioned tissue guards - the actual hand-colored images, text pages and photogravure illustrations remain clean and bright. Signed and numbered on the limitation page by the publisher, this being copy number 136 of 500. A beautiful copy of an important 19th century big game hunting book. "A sumptuous Victorian-era work that details scientific knowledge of African big game and is highlighted by numerous hunting adventures from its host of contributors. The hand-colored plates of African game heads are especially lovely." Ref. Czech p. 25/26. Description: Signed Limited Edition. 1-500 copies numbered and signed by the publisher, Rowland Ward. This being number 100. Tall, heavy 4to. xx, 612 pp. With fifteen hand-colored plates by J. Smit (each with a printed tissue guard) and numerous photogravure illustrations by E. Caldwell and others. 3/4 black leather binding with green cloth; 5 raised spinal bands. Many of the most noted big game hunters of the time contributed towards this defining work of African hunting, including Harry Johnston, and F. C. Selous. The major contributor was noted naturalist, Richard Lydekker. Ex library (Museums Trustees of Kenya) with appropriate canceled stamps. The binding is very tight with some rubbing of the leather at the extremities. Scattered foxing on the plates as is typical, else this is a very good book. Scarce.

Beautiful ex-libris bookplate on front pastedown of Ernest E. Testi {Kamchimba}. Twenty-five contributors including Frederick Selous, R. Lydekker, Percy Rendall, Alfred Sharpe, Lord Delamere, A.E. Pease, Lt. Col. William Sitwell, Sir Harry Johnston, Dr. D.G. Elliot, et al. Previous owner name and date August 1926 at top of limitation page, a few minor flaws, a very handsome volume.
