CHURCHILL, [Sir] Winston Spencer (1874-1965). The Great War. Fully Illustrated with Photographs, Drawings and Maps. In 26 Original Parts, [The World Crisis]. London: George Newnes, 1933, 1933.

Price: US$609.55 + shipping

Description: [Great War] First illustrated edition of the World Crisis with a new forward by Churchill. The 26 original fortnightly parts. Magazine format, illustrated with photos, drawings and maps. Publisher's blue and white paper covers, priced at 1s each. Very good indeed, with some occasional rubbing and fraying, fragile paper spines with some wear as expected, though light. This comprehensive account of the Great War is both analytical, and on occasions a justification from the author for his part in the proceedings. It is claimed that Churchill considered the work "not history, but a contribution to history." Since its publication both biographers and historians have considered it Churchill's masterpiece, eclipsing his better-known account 'The Second World War.' Indeed, T.E. Lawrence regarded the second volume, '1915', as "far and away the best war-book I've yet read." This illustrated version was later issued in book form in 3 volumes. Description: First illustrated edition of Churchill's history of the First World War, first published without illustrations from 1923 to 1931 as The World Crisis, here abridged and rechristened The Great War. The edition was published every fortnight between September 1933 and October 1934. A three-volume edition followed on completion. "The book as a whole was a stupendous narrative of the war in Europe featuring masterly set-piece accounts of major battles.
