Description: BROWN, Paul. Aintree, Grand Nationals - Past and Present. New York: The Derrydale Press, 1930. 4to., (12 4/8 x 9 4/8 inches). Half-title, title-page printed in red and black. ORIGINAL PEN AND INK DRAWING frontispiece signed by the artist Paul Brown lower right, illustrated throughout by Brown and from photographs. Original publisher's red morocco, gilt, top edges gilt (a bit scuffed at the extremities). Provenance: presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title to "Sheldon Prentice very sincerely Paul Brown". Limited edition, number 16 of 50 large paper copies of a total edition of 900 copies. From the Introduction: "What makes the Grand National at Aintree, England, the greatest steeplechase in the world and the Maryland Hunt Cup Race at Baltimore, Maryland, the greatest and most popular Hunter race in America, drawing, in the case of the former, people from practically all over the world? As the purse to the winner in the Grand National varies greatly, often amounting to little compared with other racing purses, and as there is no purse in the Maryland Hunt Cup Race, merely a trophy, it is self-evident that it is the spirit which originated these races and still permeates them with makes them what they are today. Because money along cannot supply the intangible something which has "made" both the Grand National and has given it its traditions and fame, and , also, the Maryland Hunt Cup - that something which for a better name we might call the Spirit of Sport personified". The Derrydale Press was established in 1927 by Connett III. An important publisher of outdoor books for a North American audience, the Derrydale Press is known for producing iconic books on the outdoors as well as hunting, fishing, horse sports, hiking, and sporting art. At the time Connett founded the press, it was the only publisher exclusively devoted to outdoor materials in the world.
