Craig, son of famed actress Ellen Terry, was a noted bon vivant, actor, artist, and literary figure. At the time of this diary, he had just turned 60 years of age (and he was to live another 34 years, dying at 94), and was at the low point of his life. His diary entries are meticulous in wide ranging detail from foreign exchange rates, political developments, his daily routines and even the chronicle of the discovery of his hernia while opening a stubbornly corked bottle of wine.
