Description: 269pp, con 23 ilustraciones dentro de texto, Sobre el autor:: Robert von Ranke Graves (Wimbledon, Londres, 24 de julio de 1895 - Deià, 7 de diciembre de 1985) fue un escritor y erudito británico. Graves se educó en la escuela Charterhouse ganando una beca para el Colegio San Juan (Universidad de Oxford), donde prosiguió sus estudios. Al estallar la Primera Guerra Mundial se alistó en el ejército en el cuerpo de fusileros; enviado al frente, los horrores que presenció en el campo de batalla le marcaron profundamente. Su primer volumen de poesías fue publicado en 1916, aunque más tarde intentaría ocultar las poesías escritas durante la guerra. Durante la batalla del Somme, ese mismo año, fue herido de tal gravedad que su familia fue informada de su muerte. A pesar de ello, se recuperó, aunque le quedaron secuelas en los pulmones, y pasó el resto de la guerra en Inglaterra, tratando en vano de reincorporarse al frente. En 1917, Graves tuvo un papel protagonista en salvar a su amigo Siegfried Sassoon, también poeta y perteneciente al cuerpo de fusileros, de la acusación de deserción de un tribunal marcial después de haberse ausentado sin permiso y dirigido a su comandante un escrito denunciando la guerra. El suceso fue objeto de la novela de Pat Barker Regeneration. A través de Sassoon, Graves conoció a Wilfred Owen, cuyo talento reconoció, y al que invitó a su boda con Nancy Nicholson en 1918. Tras su matrimonio, Graves se matriculó en la Universidad de Oxford al tiempo que abría una pequeña tienda para mantenerse, pero el negocio terminó en fracaso. En 1926 consiguió un puesto en la Universidad del Cairo, donde le acompañaron su esposa, sus hijos y la poetisa Laura Riding. Con Riding fundó la editorial Seizin Press y publicó dos obras académicas bien acogidas: A Survey of Modernist Poetry (1927) y A Pamphlet Against Anthologies (1928). En 1929 se trasladó con Riding a Deià, en Mallorca, isla que tuvo que abandonar en 1936 por la guerra civil española En 1929 publicó su autobiografía Goodbye to All That ('Adiós a todo eso', revisada por él mismo y publicada de nuevo en 1957), obra que tuvo un gran éxito pero le costó muchas de sus amistades. En 1934 publicó su obra más célebre Yo, Claudio, en la que a partir de fuentes clásicas construye un complejo y completo relato de la vida del emperador romano Claudio, historia que prosiguió más tarde con la secuela Claudio el dios, publicada en 1943. También fue autor de la novela histórica Count Belisarius (1938), en la que relata la vida del general bizantino Belisario. En 1939 regresó a Inglaterra, donde comenzó una relación sentimental con Beryl Hodge. En 1946, tras el paréntesis de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, regresó a Deià, Mallorca, localidad en la que contrajo matrimonio con Beryl en 1950. Ahora su casa de Deià es un museo. En 1948 publicó la controvertida obra La diosa blanca, en la que expone su peculiar visión de la inspiración poética. Description: First edition thus, first printing. Originally published in 1929, this is the revised edition. Published by Cassell in London, 1957. This is a very good (or better) copy. The dust wrapper, catching and alluring, has some mild tearing to the top of the spine, some slight creasing throughout. There is a large amount of foxing to the front panel, which extends to the flaps, rear panel and text blocks. The author's signature is present on the front flap, flat signed in dark blue ink. The text blocks, as mentioned, are mildly foxed throughout. The boards have a slight lean, though free from notable chips and marks. Overall, this is a very good (or better) of a scarce reissue. An autobiography.
