First Edn., 1891; full burgundy cloth; titling/facsinile signature/publisher's logo blocked in gilt (bright) to front board; titling blocked in gilt (moderately dulled) to spine; top edge gilt (moderately dulled); 66pp.; illus. bw. photo. (portait frontispiece). Lightly soiled/moderately faded spine rubbed/crushed at top/tail, but complete/intact; rear joint very faded; boards slightly scuffed, and rear board moderately faded at top edge, but boards quitr crispfore/bottom edges slightly tanned; slight foxing to endpapers/preliminaries, but pages generally clean/bright/very crisp; front hinge very tender, but binding holding; all complete/intact. Front free endpaper inscribed (in black ink) by Katharine St. John Conway (maiden name of socialist pioneer/activist, Katharine Bruce Glasier (1867-1950)), and dated 26th Nov. 1892. Also inscribed, probably in another (but contemporary) hand, are brief references to the Norwich-born Socialist pioneer/politician, Fred Henderson (James Frederick 'Fred' Henderson, 1867-1957). With Typed Letter Signed (on headed paper printed with Norwich Public Libraries, Central Library, Norwich, and dated 27th May, 1953) from the City Librarian, Philip Hepworth, to Alderman Fred Henderson, JP of Earlham Rise, Norwich, in which he lists auction prices realised for First Edn. copies of Walt Whitman's 'Good-bye My Fancy' (letter typed to recto; paper has one horizontal/two vertical folds, with very small tear (approx. 10mm) to bottom edge, but paper very clean/bright; signature ('P. Frontispiece photo-portrait of Whitman in b/w, protected with a tissue guard. A first edition of the 2nd annex (expansion) to Walt Whitman's seminal poetry collection 'Leaves of Grass', here presented in its original form as an individual volume. This first section of the work is comprised of a total of 31 short poems from the acclaimed poet. The second part of the work is comprised of 4 essays by Whitman. The front contains a preface and table of contents. This annex was later added to the so-called "deathbed" edition of Leaves of Grass the following year, the final edition of the work prepared by Whitman, issued two months before his death. Binding with light rubbing to corners, head and tail of spine lightly bumped. Front cover with a small 1/4 inch stain on the the top right corner. A some light scratches to the back cover. Book block tight. Interior clean, except for a few smalls stains and smudges in the margins of pages 6-9. Binding in very good-, interior in very good+ condition overall. Description: This 'Very Good' to 'Near Fine' hardback was published by David McKay of 23 South Ninth Street, Philadelphia in the USA in 1891/2. This copy is from the so-called New Edition, expanded with additional selections, first issue. This edition has Whitman's final corrections and his endorsement to the text. Walt Whitman was ailing when this was being produced. His friend, Horace Traubel, arranged for 50 copies, in wrappers, to be given to Walt who sent them to friends. Then the remaining copies of which this is one, were issued in dark green cloth with the top edge with gilt. Although the author's signature on the title page looks completely authentic it is a facsimile done for this selected first issue. The green cloth binding has some scuffing. The spine titles are in gilt. The front paste down-endpaper has the inked name of R Drayton Johnson. The main text of the book has 438 numbered pages. The size of the book in inches is 8.6 x 6.0 x 1.6 and it weighs 0.84 kg. The book has been in a private English collection for some 40 years and has been looked after well. The complete tittle of this book is as follows: 'Leaves of Grass Including Sands at Seventy, Good-Bye My Fancy, A Backward Glance O'er Travel'd Roads and Portrait from Life.

On the front free fly: "Compliments H. Traubel," and underneath that: "this was Will Innes' copy which he gave to me on Sunday December 17- 1967- Gertrude Traubel." Will Innes was a friend of the Traubel family, a noted Whitman collector, and gave a significant portion of his library to his granddaughter, Gertrude, in 1967, who became a great advocate and enthusiast of Whitman.
