Ward, Lynd. Madman's Drum: A Novel in Woodcuts. Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, New York, 1930.

Price: US$200.00 + shipping

Description: Unpaginated (258 pp). Printed and bound by Plimpton Press, Norwood, MA. Octavo. Black and white pictorial paper over boards. Paper label on spine. Lacking dust jacket. Very good minus. Rubbed edges and worn corners. Spine is cocked and with a small spot of discoloration near bottom edge. Binding is firm. Previous owner's name inside. Interior otherwise clean with bright plates throughout. Madman's Drum tells the story of a drum stolen from a murdered African during the slave trade and the curse this founding violence visits on generations of the slave runner's family. Remarkably, the drama unfolds without a single word through a visual narrative of 118 wood engravings producing what Ward called a "novel in woodcuts." In a traditional novel one sees the words and imagines the action. In a wordless novel, the converse: one sees the action and imagines the words. Madman's Drum followed closely on the heels of Ward's most famous wordless novel, Gods' Man (1929). Ward was to create six wordless novels by the end of the 1930's and illustrated or designed covers for over 200 books across five decades of remarkable work. (Robert Dance. Illustrated by Lynd Ward. Norwich Vermont: Impermanent Press. 2015.). First trade edition (published simultaneously with signed limited edition).

Condition: Very Good

Description: Fourth printing of this striking wordless novel, Ward's first, that follows an artist who sells his soul for a magic paintbrush. Lynd Ward relates this dark and atmospheric story through the bold geometry of Art Deco. Influenced by German Expressionism and Frans Masereel, Ward's sequential wood engravings feature stark contrasts that add weight to the narrative. Ward's exaggerated perspectives would later be adopted by graphic novels and comics, influencing generations of sequential artists. Overall, a handsome copy of a book often found in lesser condition. 8.25'' x 5.5''. Original cloth-backed pictorial boards. Head edge stained black, fore-edge machine deckle. Black endpapers. Condition: Very Good

Description: Octavo size, 150 pp., signed by Lynd Ward. American artist Lynd Ward (1905-1985) demonstrates his masterful storytelling in "God's Man", a wordless novel made with wood engravings which depicts a man's pact with the devil in exchange for a magical paintbrush which enabled him to gain fame as an artist; it progresses through 139 engraved woodblocks to show his downfall, temporary redemption, and ultimate payment of the price for the deal he made. Ward's wood engravings are rich in detail and emotion, and the story has a rhythm as the reader follows the character through interactions with dark, forbidding characters and uncaring urban streets; "God's Man" was the first American wordless novel, and Ward's work is often seen as a precursor to the modern graphic novel in its ability to convey character and feeling through the use of image alone. ___DESCRIPTION: Decorated paper over boards with a black cloth shelfback, the front and back with an inset illustration by Ward, paper spine label with the publisher's device, top edge stained black, fore- and bottom edges rough-cut, black endpapers, signed by Lynd Ward on the half-title page in black ink, small vignette and decorations on the title page, stated third printing on the copyright page of January, 1930 (two months following the first printing), Ward's wood engravings on the recto only of each page telling the story; octavo size (8.25" by 6"), unpaginated, [i-vi] being the preliminary pages followed by 144 leaves of wood engravings. ___CONDITION: A bit better than very good overall, the text block strong and square with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; overall wear to the paper boards, spine label sunned and slightly worn, the final illustration with a shallow vertical crease (only visible on the verso, not affecting the illustration), and residue from an older label (bookseller's ticket?) at the bottom left corner of the rear pastedown; near fine internally with a somewhat worn binding, nicely signed by Lynd Ward. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Ward, Lynd. Gods' Man and Mad Man's Drum (two volumes). Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, New York, 1930.

Price: US$750.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Octavos [21.5 cm] Black cloth spines with black and white illustrated paper over boards. Publisher's black topstain. The spines are rolled and the extremities are lightly rubbed. The top fore-edge corner of the rear board of Gods' Man is quite dinged. There is a previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown of Gods' Man and there is a bookplate on the front flyleaf of Mad Man's Drum. Gods' Man also has a name in pen on the verso of the front flyleaf. Publisher's review slip tucked into Gods' Man. Ward's first and second "wordless novels." Ward wrote of the works "I had earlier believed that every block should be conceived in the simplest terms possible, then cut with an absolute minimum of tool work. I had worked on the premise that every image should be developed only as far as was necessary to produce a comprehensible statement for that particular point in the visual sequence. Now, with those earlier miles behind me, it seemed reasonable to take a different approach to the actual cutting the blocks. In God's Man, except for the use of round and flat gravers to remove the white areas, all the rendering of figures and landscapes had been done with a single line tool. In Madman's Drum, by contrast, I sought to develop a wider range of tool work and utilized small round gravers to break up a large dark area with small jabs of the tool, thus achieving a variety both of tonal effect and textural quality. At the same time, I put more emphasis on decorative patterns in such things as dress material and the walls of interiors, which I hoped would not only result in richer and more varied impact from block to block but also help the reader identify recurring characters and backgrounds more readily as the story developed."
