Description: First Edition, First Printing with the folding map and 4 lithograph plates present. The book is bound in early leather on the spine with with raised bands. The binding is tight with some rubbing to the spine and light wear to the boards. The pages are clean with light discoloration from age. There is NO writing, marks or bookplates in the book. A lovely copy housed in a customer slipcase for preservation.

Description: First edition. Bound in contemporary full morocco with elaborate gilt borders to the covers, raised bands and gilt titles and decoration to the spine. All edges gilt. In excellent condition. Charming gift inscription from one school leaver to his friend, dated 1861. Four tinted lithograph plates and a folding map Burton's first book, an account of his travels through south-west India, from Bombay to Goa, whilst on sick leave from the Indian Army in 1847.

Prize inscription on half-title. Penzer, pp. 37-8; Casada 37: "It shows Burton's early development as a travel writer and bears all the hallmarks of his efforts in this genre."

Endpapers preserved with hinges professionally repaired with archival paper tape. Backstrip slightly darkened. Light cover soiling, scattered foxing. Bookplate (Burke Casari). First issue of Burton's first book. Penzer calls this first issue in fawn cloth "rare."
