"Beatrix Potter, writer of some of the most beloved children's books of all time, was a woman of immense talent, indefatigable spirit, and a generous heart.Although she grew up in London, she was deeply influenced by long family holidays in the countryside, first in Scotland and later in the English lake district. As was the custom in families of her class, she was educated at home by governesses. An eager student of languages and literature, she grew up loving classic folk and fairy tales. Her talent for drawing and painting was discovered early and encouraged" (Beatrix Potter Society). Her career began with the release of the now-beloved Tale of Peter Rabbit; and her subsequent works expanded into a magical world of anthropomorphic animals such as Tom Kitten, Squirrel Nutkin, and Benjamin Bunny. Condition: Near Fine

Description: First edition of this tale of a village shop run by a cat and a dog, based upon a store local to Potter's own Hill Top farm. Potter originally composed this story as a Christmas present for Louie Warne, the daughter of her publisher. In it, she drew from her own experiences visiting the general store in Sawrey, which Margaret Lane notes was "the focus of village life, as much a centre for meeting and gossip." In the published version, Potter dedicated the book to the real shop's owner, John Taylor, who "thinks he might pass as a Dormouse" - and indeed, Mr. John Dormouse and his daughter appear at the end of the book. 7'' x 5.25''. Original tan paper boards stamped in green, pictorial paste-on. Color pictorial endpapers. Illustrated by Potter with 10 full-page color plates and black-and-white in-text illustrations. 52 pages. Price: US$5131.05 + shipping

Description: First edition, with the printed glassine jacket. The third of Potter's books to be printed in large format, Ginger and Pickles was developed from an original manuscript given to Louie Warne, Harold Warne's daughter, as a Christmas gift in 1908. The story was based on the village shop in Sawrey, owned by John Taylor when Potter bought Hill Top farm, presenting Potter with a dilemma over the dedication: "In a way, it ought to be Louie's book, but she can look forward: I sometimes think old John Taylor is keeping alive to see this one printed. I should rather like to put his name in if you don't object?" In the event, old John was made the dedicatee but died before publication. The first two impressions are indistinguishable. Linder p. 428; Quinby 17. Small quarto. Original buff boards, spine and front cover lettered in green, front cover with pictorial label, illustrated endpapers. With the printed glassine jacket. Housed in a custom white cloth flat-back folding box. Frontispiece and 9 colour illustrations by the author. Some light foxing to contents; an excellent, bright copy in the jacket with some minor chips to extremities.
