Description: 1st edition, later printing. It is complicated to source the edition and printing of this book. 1st edition determinants this book contains include: 1873 on copyright page, but 1874 on title page, raised bands on spine, Illustrator listed as White on title page but WH Lockwood on copyright page, list of illustrations end with "Alice". We believe it to be a later printing of the 1st edition because: there is no foldout map, p. 403 contains an illustration, and there is no repeated block of text on p. 351/352. Contains four pages of publishers advertising at end of book; these pages are often removed from copies of this edition. Hardcover, no DJ. Cover at spine has been placed atop reinforcing tape. Wear, chipping, and cracking at spine heel & toe. Heavy diffuse shelfwear across front and back, and back contains prominnet scuff marks and a few divots. Front inner hinge is reinforced with tape. First 30 pages have moderate age spotting, all text is legible. Occasional light age spotting appears on approximately one third of remaining pages throughout book. Pages are otherwise clean in tight binding. This is the 1st edition of a historically important book, as it was the only book length work Mark Twain ever wrote with a coauthor, and it was an immediate sensation and the term Gilded Age quickly entered into the public discourse due to this book.
