SINCLAIR LEWIS. SINCLAIR LEWIS, THE NOBLE LAUREATE AUTHOR, TO HIS CLOSE FRIEND FATHER MURPHY, ANNOUNCING THE COMPLETION OF HIS NEW NOVEL: GIDEON PLANISH. , 1943.

Price: US$795.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: LEWIS, SINCLAIR (1885-1951). American novelist, first American to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Autograph Letter Signed, Ever, with all our greetings Sinclair Lewis, on Hotel Dorset, 30 West 54th Street, New York letterhead. Three pages folded, quarto. January 6, 1943. To Dear Father Murphy. Lewis writes: Dear Father Murphy: It was good to get your Christmas cheer, & I echo it. I m at last back in Ny after 8 quite happy months in Minnesota, & I returned with my novel done. It s called Gideon Planish, & Random House will publish it in mid-April. I find Marcella happy and well, working for the Limited Editions Club nut incurably longing for the stage. I don t know how long I ll be here, but probably for some months. Joseph is better & better; he is always so popular with all my friends, for his tact & humor. Ever, with all our greetings Sinclair Lewis. Lewis writes to his good friend Father Murphy just prior to the publication of Gideon Planish (1943). This work, like the rest of Lewis later writing, did not live up to his work from the 1920s, and from 1930 onward Lewis reputation was in a steady decline. Lewis, notorious for his inability to settle down as well as his alcoholic tendencies, had recently divorced his second wife, Dorothy Thompson, a distinguished journalist and foreign correspondent, although he had begun an affair in 1939 with the much younger Marcella Powers, who would soon become an editor at Good Housekeeping. A fine, attractive letter from the author of 'Elmer Gantry' and 'Babbitt'.
