Black and white photograph of Joyce, taken in 1915, playing a guitar in Zurich, after arriving from Trieste. Description: Hardback small octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in good dustjacket), red boards (grey cloth spine), frontispiece, pages lightly toned, edges little foxed, reverse side jacket lightly toned (spine faded, small edge tears, tiny hole spine, flap price-clipped, light loss spine ends), written price front cover jacket. 64 pp. Originally prepared for publication 1959, this fragmented autobiographical love story, written by James Joyce in Trieste, thought to be in 1914 at age 32 (the year he started writing 'Ulysses'). The introduction by his biographer Richard Ellmann - a fascinating piece of literary detection - dates the work from internal evidence. The title is explained, as are the circumstances behind the story, and a possible reason is given why, after the copy was prepared for the printer, it was never published. This reissue of the first Viking Press limited edition retains the introduction and notes, with some revisions. The book includes four manuscript pages in reduced facsimile, as well as a frontispiece portrait. (Unnumbered pages. This revised edition was published in the same year, 1968, as the first limited edition.).

Description: First edition, first impression; 8vo; folding plates of the facsimile of the original notes and manuscript; publisher's quarter red cloth, over grey boards, titles to spine gilt, paper label to upper board, in the original matching grey card slipcase. This is the first edition of Joyce's mildly erotic piece which he had written around 1915-1916. There are within it clear elements later to be found in the Nausicaa and Oxen of the Sun sections of Ulysses. That apart it is a marvellous read in its own right. Spine very slightly dull but a very copy in the lightly sunned and very little marked slipcase.
