Description: RARE book with 41 plates by the legendary British caricaturist and book illustrator George Cruikshank (1792-1878) , praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life. His most famous work are the illustrations for Charles Dickens' books. This book is a complication of illustrations from eight different books by Henri Fielding, Tobias Smollett and others (see subtitle). Each illustration is accompanied by the corresponding chapter from the respective book. 170x115mm. VIII+82 pages & 41 b&w plates. Brown corrugated cloth Hardcover with gilt lettering on spine. Text block upper edge dyed gilt. Cover stained and lumpy/wrinkled. Cover corners bumped and peeling, edges slightly bumped. Spine edges peeling. Spine front hinges partly cracked. Small part of spine loose with small piece missing. Two strips of scotch tape on spine and cover. First page and plate coming loose from binding. Second plate detached from binding. Pages slightly yellowing. All plates clean. [SUMMARY]: Despite the aforementioned wear to cover and spine, this extremely rare book of brilliant works by the legendary illustrator and caricaturist is in very good condition for its age. Description: Good, first edition book with title page and 36 plates. 1834 is shown on title page but the last parts were issued in 1836. The 36 plates all have substantial tissue-guards. Professionally repaired as to front spine gutter which appears to have been re-attached. Dark maroon leather covered boards with gilt lettering, border edges and corner decorations on front panel, same on back panel without the lettering. Six multi-ruled panels with gilt borders on spine, five raised bands. Gilt decals in in four panels, gilt lettering in two plus the lower edge at tail. Upper page edges are gilt. Outside board edges also double gilt ruled. Inside dentelles on front and back paste downs. Some smudges and scrapes to board panels - which are darker than shown in photos. Edges at head and tail of board spine and back spine fold are scuffed. Lower fore-edge corners are rubbed through. Minimal rubs on upper fore-edge corners. Some scuffing to all outside edges. The FFEP is detached and has several chips around the edges - see photo.First blank page aft FFEP has a 1 3/8" closed vertical tear at the lower corner parallel to gutter; the blank page following that is separated 1 3/8" at the gutter as is the title page which follows that. Other than the first several pages, text block is stable. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition descriptions. Additional photos are available at your request. Description: First edition. Oblong quarto, (7.5 x 11") : [2] leaves (1 wood-engraved wrapper and 1 etched title page), [31] leaves of plates. A good copy in full red levant morocco, with gilt tooling to the spine in six panels with raised bands, gilt fillet borders, marbled endpapers, and all edges gilt. Owner's bookplate on the front pastedown. Originally issued in parts, this portfolio of plates was "sketched, etched and published by George Cruikshank from 1833 through 1836. It consists of the original 24 numbered plates issued from 1833 to 1834, and 7 additional plates issued between 1835 and 1836. This copy includes the original wood-engraved front wrapper titled, "My Sketch Book" followed by an etched title page, "Vol 1 of My Sketch Book". The 24 etched plates are bound out of order: beginning with nos. 21 - 24, 1 - 16, followed by the 7 additional etched plates, and ending with nos. 17 - 20. The front free endpaper, flyleaf and wrapper are detached, with small chips to the corners of the wrapper; and with some soiling, minor browning, and light scattered foxing to the plates. The front board is loose at the outer joint, with moderate wear to the corners and board edges.

First state of the second plate in number five. Wrapper No IV is as described by COHN: "The wrappers of Part III are used, and '4' is written in ink over the III with Cruikshank's complaint of Mr. Kidd the publisher." .Backstrip of No. 3 chipped, No. VII cover stained, approx. 9 centimeters from upper spine to the "My" in title, balance of issues are sound, bright and fresh.
