Description: 307pp. Quarto [30 cm] Rebacked in black cloth, with the original brown cloth over the boards, and a recent printed paper title label adhered to the spine. With eleven heliotype plates, and 3 plates, in four parts (3 of which are fold-out). No atlas. Good condition. The underlying boards are exposed along the edges, there is a glue-stained patch on the front pastedown, and the title page, with notations in pencil, is detached, and laid in. The pages are clean. The first of Dutton's two great works for the USGS. Taken together, these works comprise the first detailed study of the four corners country and the Colorado Plateau: Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico.

Description: First Edition. 4to. Original dark brown cloth, title stamped in gilt on the spine, xxxii, 307pp. Illustrated with numerous charts. Plates, including three large folding ones in nice condition. Full-Page Heliotypes with protective tissues collated complete. Atlas not present. Classic survey and report associated with Department Of The Interior, U.S. Geographical And Geological Survey Of The Rocky Mountain Region, under the direction of J. W. Powell. Major geological work on Utah by the noted geologist, Clarence Dutton, that was published two years prior to his more famous work 'The Tertiary History of the Grand Canon.' This is the rarer of the two monographs. Clarence E. Dutton (1841-1912) was head of the division of volcanic geology for the U.S. Geological Survey and carried out geological investigations in the Grand Canyon and on the plateaus of Utah. Light wear to the spine ends and corners, interior clean and bright, else a very good copy.
