This is the California and Great Basin portion, issued in "Ex. Doc. No. 17, House of Representatives, in 1850, of the same, but larger map that included Oregon, issued in 1848 with Senate Misc. Doc. No. 148, 30th Congress, 1st Session. 16 5/8 x 19 ½ inches, folded size 4 ½ x 7 1/2. (See Carl I. Wheat, "The Maps of the California Gold Region" – 1848-1857, numbers 40 and 41, the Martino reprint,1995). This map shows all of California; all the area that would become Nevada and the western half of Arizona; east to the Wasatch Range and "Mormon Settlements"; slivers of Oregon to the north and Mexico to the south. The route of all Fremont’s explorations to date are traced. With folds for insertion in the House document or perhaps in the pamphlet included below. In Fine condition. With: "Geographical Memoir Upon Upper California in Illustration of His Map of Oregon and California, by John Charles Fremont" Washington: Wendell and Van Benthuysen, Printers, 1848. First edition (Kurutz, 256a; Cowan, p.223; Howes, F366). Original printed pale blue wrappers, 67 pp. Cowan asserts that "the folding map accompanies but few copies"; Howes did not see a copy with a map; the present copy shows no sign of having included the map. Some wear to the edges and dog-eared leaves, a Very Good copy. There was another, abbreviated, 40 page edition issued in 1849, the Tippin & Streeper (printers) edition (Wheat, 87).
