POUND, Ezra.. Gaudier-Brzeska. A Memoir. Including the published writings of the sculptor, and a selection from his letters, with thirty-eight illustrations, consisting of photographs of his sculpture, and four portraits by Walter Benington, and numerous reproductions of drawings.. London: The Bodley Head, 1916, 1916.

Price: US$1272.02 + shipping

Description: First edition, first impression, one of 450 copies, of Pound's important monograph. "The enthusiasm of artists and the publication of Pound's Gaudier-Brzeska: a Memoir (1916) and H. S. Ede's Savage Messiah (1931) led to a growing appreciation of his catalytic role in the birth of modernist sculpture in Britain" (ODNB). The two first met in 1913, at an exhibition of Gaudier-Brzeska's work in London. "Pound befriended Gaudier-Bzeska, championed his work in magazine articles and promoted its sale. Together with Wyndham Lewis and his associates, Gaudier-Brzeska was involved in the vorticist movement and his work figured in their exhibitions and publication Gaudier-Brzeska's massive marble bust, known as the 'Hieratic Head of Ezra Pound', remains an icon of friendship and an avant-garde movement in art" (Wilson, p. 226). The artist was killed in 1915, while serving at the front at Neuville-St Vaast in Artois and was buried in the military cemetery there; deeply affected by this loss, Pound published the present biography the following year. Gallup notes that of the 1,000 sets of sheets printed, 200 were used for the American issue, 100 were bound up in 1927-28, and 250 were reissued by Laidlaw and Laidlaw in 1939, meaning that, at most, 450 copies can be considered to be of the first edition. Provenance: armorial bookplate on the front pastedown of Clifton Waller Barrett (1901-1991), American shipping magnate, bibliophile, collector, and founder of the Barrett Library of American Literature at the University of Virginia. Gallup A10. Peter Wilson, A Preface to Ezra Pound, 2014. Quarto. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, elaborate blind stamp on front cover after a design by Gaudier-Brzeska, top edge trimmed, others untrimmed. Photographic portrait frontispiece and 37 plates, title page printed in red and black. Slight rubbing to extremities, peripheral toning to outer leaves, intermittent light foxing to contents, otherwise clean: a very good copy.
