Condition: Good

Description: Further Chronicles of Avonlea; Which have to do with many personalities and events in and about Avonlea, The Home of the Heroine of Green Gables, including tales of Aunt Cynthia, The Materializing of Cecil, Donald Spenser’s daughter, Jane’s Baby, The Failure of Robert Monroe, The Return of Hester, The Little Brown Book of Miss Emily, Sara’s Way, The Son of Thyra Carewe, The Education of Betty, The Selflessness of Eunice Carr, The Dream-Child, The Conscience Case of David Bell, Only a Common Fellow, and finally the story of Tannis of the Flats. All related by L. M. Montgomery; Author of Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island, Chronicles of Avonlea, Kilimeny of the Orchard, etc.; illustrated by John Goss; Boston, The Page Company, MDCCCCXX; copyright, 1920 by The Page Company; first impression March, 1920. Lucy Maud Montgomery OBE (1874 – 1942), published as L. M. Montgomery, was a Canadian author best known for a series of novels beginning in 1908 with Anne of Green Gables. The book was an immediate success. The central character, Anne Shirley, an orphaned girl, made Montgomery famous in her lifetime and gave her an international following. The first novel was followed by a series of sequels with Anne as the central character. Montgomery went on to publish 20 novels as well as 530 short stories, 500 poems, and 30 essays. Most of the novels were set in Prince Edward Island, and locations within Canada's smallest province became a literary landmark and popular tourist site – namely Green Gables farm. Starting in 1917, Montgomery was engaged in five bitter, costly, and burdensome lawsuits with Louis Coues Page, owner of the publishing house The Page Company, that continued until she finally won in 1928. The action included this book that was issued without Montgomery’s consent. On 7 November 1928, Montgomery received a cheque for the $15,000 US dollars that auditors had established Page had cheated her out of. Page did not realize he was up against a determined woman. In terms of sales, both in her lifetime and since, Montgomery was the most successful Canadian author of all time. This book, 301 pages, is in good condition. The covers of the book are slightly scuffed ant the bottom corners are worn through, 10MM on the front cover and 3MM on the back cover. But the book is very sound and square. There are 6 b & w illustrations by Goss, and the frontispiece has a tissue guard that is wrinkled at the bottom right. There is an ownership signature, dated April, 1920. There is no dust jacket, as commonly found, and the presence of the dj adds hundreds of dollars to the price of the book. This is a very acceptable copy of a truly scarce book.
