The book is broken up into four parts: "John James, Pioneer;" "Personal Recollections of Vinton Lee James;" "San Antonio;" and "Western Texas." The author was born in San Antonio in 1858, and shares a wealth of personal information of his early life in that city and its environs. His father, John James, was a highly regarded pioneer surveyor of Texas during the Republic and early statehood.
