Description: [moderately shelfwear, bumping to top corners; jacket heavily worn, moderately soiled, chipping to spine extremities, 2-inch tear at bottom front hinge with a little paper loss, split at front foldover about 3 inches up from bottom, ditto rear foldover about one inch]. One of the great novels to come out of its author's World War II experience, in this case centering around Pearl Harbor, where Jones was stationed before, during and immediately after the Japanese attack. Filmed to great Academy Award-winning effect by director Fred Zinnemann in 1953, with a raft of stellar performances -- Montgomery Clift, Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Frank Sinatra, Donna Reed, Ernest Borgnine, each and every one absolutely superb. (Sinatra and Reed took home two of the film's eight Oscars; it also took the Best Picture prize, and the directing and writing awards, to Zinnemann and Daniel Taradash respectively.) One of the rare instances where a movie adaptation lives up to the book -- no small feat, considering the numerous censorship problems presented by Jones's book at a time when the Production Code still held sway over the U.S. film industry. The jacket on this copy, unfortunately, looks like it may well have been through the war itself. NOISBN

Description: From Here to Eternity by James Jones (Post 1977 Book-of-the-Month Hardcover in Dust Jacket) • Author: James Jones (1921–1976) • Publisher: Charles Scribner’s Sons New York, NY U.S.A. 1951 “Diamond Head, Hawaii, 1941. Pvt. Robert E. Lee Prewitt is a champion welterweight and a fine bugler. But when he refuses to join the company's boxing team, he gets "the treatment" that may break him or kill him. First Sgt. Milton Anthony Warden knows how to soldier better than almost anyone, yet he's risking his career to have an affair with the commanding officer's wife. Both Warden and Prewitt are bound by a common bond: the Army is their heart and blood . . .and, possibly, their death. In this magnificent but brutal classic of a soldier's life, James Jones portrays the courage, violence and passions of men and women who live by unspoken codes and with unutterable despair. . .in the most important American novel to come out of World War II, a masterpiece that captures as no other the honor and savagery of men.” x + 803pp. Author's acclaimed FIRST book, and winner of the National Book award. Basis for Columbia Picture's 1953 film, director Fred Zinnemann's acclaimed film production which won 8 out of the 13 Oscars it was nominated for at the 1954 Academy awards. Description: From Here to Eternity by James Jones, Hardcover, First US Edition (1951). This is a first edition, second state (the copyright page does not contain the 'A' underneath the publishing details). Book in very good condition, in a good price clipped dust jacket. The book has bumping to the spine ends and a spine lean, with some ageing to the page edges. The dust jacket shows some wear and ageing, especially to the extremities, with loss to the bottom of the spine. The dust jacket is encased in a protective removable plastic sleeve. Overall a very good copy for a book of this age, which is regarded a classic of its time. (See pictures).

Price: US$200.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of the National Book Award-winning novel of intersecting lives in Hawaii in the months before the attack on Pearl Harbour - adapted into a star-studded, Oscar-winning film. James Jones drew on his own experiences as an infantryman to set the stage for FROM HERE TO ETERNITY; his portrayal of the interplay and clash of personalities at a Hawaiian barracks earned him the 1952 National Book Award. The film adaptation of FROM HERE TO ETERNITY features several changed narrative elements to appease the Production Code Office and the US Army, including the removal of references to homosexuality and venereal disease. In return, the Army allowed the production to film on-location and to use aircraft. With a cast including Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, and Frank Sinatra, it was nominated for 12 Academy Awards including Best Picture, which it won. 8.25'' x 5.75''. Original black paper boards, gilt-lettered spine. In original unclipped ($4.50) color pictorial dust jacket by SKA jacket design. Scribner seal and "A" on copyright page. [12], 861, [1] pages. Very light wear to boards, slight soil to bottom edge of text block. Jacket with toned spine, area of dampstain to top of rear panel, a bit of edgewear. Very good in very good minus jacket.

Description: 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 861 pages; [SIGNED Presentation Edition] 1951 Charles Scribner's Sons. HC/DJ. 1st edition, 1st printing. One of the specially signed copies issued by Scribner with Jones' signature on a numbered limitation leaf at front, though the total number of these "presentation" copies is not specified and was at least 1200. This copy numbered 277. Binding is shelf cocked in the spine and shaken with front hinge tender, though sound. Prior owner bookplate to front pastedown. Endpages with light offset toning at front edges. Jacket shelf rubbed and worn at edges with rubbing and furring to the front flap fold. An unusual period reinforcement to the rear of the jacket along the front flap fold and top of the spine area done with proprietary labeled adhesive paper tape from the Pickwick Bookshop of Hollywood. The pictorial dust jacket element of the trumpet was apparently used as a form to trace with indent from the trace visible on the blank reverse of the jacket. Jones' breakout 1st novel received the National Book Award and was the basis for the Academy Award winning film of the same name starring Clift, Lancaster, Fonda, Reed and Kerr. This copy of the special Signed Presentation edition is reader and shelf worn but in the original dust jacket and still a decent and shelf attractive example. G++/G+
