Walter R. Brooks. Freddy and the Baseball Team from Mars. Alfred A. Knopf, 1955.

Price: US$25.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Freddy and the Baseball Team From Mars by Walter R. Brooks was published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1955. This 241-page, 56-year-old, ex-library copy is a First Edition in G condition. Due in large part to some heavy handling/countless reads by many interested parties, there is noticeable shelf wear in evidence, especially at top and bottom edges of spine and at four outer tips of front/back cover boards(this book has, I'm certain, been rebound, for obvious reasons--and, Weise's characters/images grace its cover, by the way). Some of the requisite library markings are present, and there is some modest yellowing of endpapers front and back, as well as pages of text. Light foxing is seen on a fair number of pages, randomly, but certainly does not impair the reading of book, or the enjoyment of any of the 40 signature black and white renderings of Kurt Weise, which render the story that much more colorful to readers, young and not so young. The story, indeed, concerns Freddy having to exercise his talents as a detective in order to fulfill the directive of Mr. Boomschmidt (owner-manager of Boomschmidt's Stupendous and Unexcelled Circus). That directive (it was really a kind request) was for Freddy to find and bring back to the circus' winter encampment one of the Martians, specifically, one Squeak-squeak, who has disappeared, possibly the victim of a kidnapping. . The story of how the Martians came to be members of Mr. Boomschmidt's circus is told in an earlier volume in the author's "Freddy" series(Freddy and the Men From Mars). At any rate, this delightful, rather strange tale still holds up well today, just as it entertained legions and legions of young listeners/readers in its heyday/glory years. Thank you very much!!
