Condition: Fine
Description: 3 volumes, complete. Volume 1: 240 pages, b/w illustrations, photos plus a number of full page colour plates. Frans Hals was one of the major painters of the Golden Age of Holland. The almost magical spontaneity and boldness of Hals' brushwork endows his paintings with a brilliance and immediacy that have assured him a unique place in European art. In this first volume the author discusses Hals' work, his development and the significance of his achievement, and relate the little that is known about his life. Volume 2: 194 pages, b/w illustrations, photos. Contains an extensive critical catalogue, in chronological order, of his 222 autograph paintings, 20 lost paintings by his hand and 81 doubtful or rejected pictures. This catalogue not only gives full details of size, location, provenance, and signature but also deals in detail with the iconography, history, condition, attribution, style and dating of each work. It also describes variants and copies. Final 2 pages are uncut and joined at bottom corner. Text is unaffected. Volume 3 : 353 pages, full of b/w illustrations, photos plus a few full page colour plates. This volume contains reproductions of all Hals' surviving pictures and no fewer than 130 large details. Many are reproduced from new photographs taken expressly for this study.
