Description: Pp. viii, 9-122. The first UK printing of this title in the 'Sixpenny Series' published by George Routledge and Sons, London in 1882. Professionally bound in red cloth with front cover bound in and with the sixpenny series issue number159 at bottom left hand corner of cover. Title gilt on spine. Corners and spine ends lightly bumped and rubbed and cover stains. Book itself is well preserved and protected inside. Rear cover and rear adverts have not been bound in. Nonetheless a very good copy of the first paper wrapped edition of Frankenstein. An increasingly scarce issue of this fragile item of which there are few survivors. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley 30 August 1797 – 1 February 1851) Her masterpiece, Frankenstein is considered an early example of science fiction. Her father was the political philosopher William Godwin and her mother was the philosopher and feminist activist Mary Wollstonecraft. In addition to her own writings she also edited and promoted the works of her husband, the Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley.
