Description: Leather binding with marbled covers, maroon leather title label. Rubbing and some wear to the leather, the outer hinges are in good order, but the inner hinges have weakened and only held by the strings-still secured- but handle with a little care. The text is complete, browning to the frontispiece and engraved title, some plates are browned, some others are fairly bright (about half of the plates with light to moderate marking and the other half with heavier browning), small stain to the bottom of edge of 3 plates at the end. Dimensions; 225 by 150mm. Pages; (4), XII, (2), 496. With 30 sheets of plates by George Cruikshank including the engraved title and frontispiece.

Description: Originally published anonymously. 1850, First Edition illustrated by George Cruikshank. Size 8.5" x 5.25", 496 pages. Half burgundy morocco over marbled boards, with five raised bands to the spine with gilt titles in the second and gilt vignettes in the remaining compartments. Condition good-very good, corners, edges and spine bands rubbed, title and engraved title dust-soiled, plates slightly toned, with a few spots and a couple of finger marks to margins of 4 plates, else generally very clean, pages clean. The first edition of Frank Fairlegh illustrated by George Cruikshank, contains the rare fully dated plate "The Retribution" opposite page 479, dated "Octr-20th -49" - said to have been suppressed in later editions. 30 illustrations by George Cruikshank.

George Cruikshank was a British caricaturist and book illustrator, best known for his illustrations in the novels of Charles Dickens. Francis Edward Smedley began his literary career by contributing to Sharpe's London Magazine anonymously. His contributions were well received and would lead to Smedley's development of 'Frank Fairlegh'. In a half morocco binding. Externally, sound with bumping and rubbing. Description: A scarce first edition of Frank Fairlegh by Francis E. Smedley. With thirty illustrations on steel by George Cruikshank. Francis Edward Smedley, (4 October 1818 – 1 May 1864) was an English novelist. His name appears in print usually as Frank E. Smedley. Smedley contributed his first book, Scenes from the Life of a Private Pupil, anonymously to Sharpe's London Magazine in 1846-1848. His first essay proved so successful that it was expanded into Frank Fairlegh, and published in book-form in 1850. In a half green morocco leather binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, smart with just minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with some scattered light foxing. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown. Description: 496p. SIGNED BINDING BY J. & E. BUMPUS. A hardcover book bound in full golden-brown leather with a gilt-decorated spine. Features gilt foredges and dentelles. Very good condition overall. The spine, edges, and corners are lightly rubbed. Spotty, hazy discoloration along the top edges of the boards. The edges of the free endpapers are tanned. A previous owner hand-wrote the author's name in pencil at the end of the preface. Otherwise, no notes in the main text. Lots of light fingerprint smudges in the margins and some lmild foxing on the plates. The binding is secure for normal handling. This copy contains the bookplate of American novelist George Barr McCutcheon, and of Philip Greely Brown, a distinguished banker and book collector in Portland, Maine. Illustrated with black and white plates by George Cruikshank.
