Description: First edition. No jacket. 1934 Hard Cover. 57 pp. Introduction by Carl van Vechten. Four Saints in Three Acts, opera consisting of a prologue and four acts, with libretto by Gertrude Stein and music by Virgil Thomson. Stein completed the libretto in 1927, and Thomson finished the piano score in 1928; the score was orchestrated in 1933 and published in 1934, and the opera was first performed in 1934. Thomson divided Stein?s libretto into scenes and acts and added two figures representing the laity to the cast of characters. The plotless opera, set in 16th-century Spain, treats two historical figures, the Spaniards St. Teresa of Ávila, St. Ignatius of Loyola, and two fictional figures, St. Settlement and St. Chavez. - Britannica

STEIN, Gertrude. Four Saints in Three Acts: An Opera to Be Sung. Random House, New York, 1934.

Price: US$150.00 + shipping

Description: Introduction by Carl Van Vechten. 8vo. Black cloth with gilt spine lettering, dust jacket. 57pp. Fine/very good. Jacket mildly age toned and spine rather darkened, with small chip at spine head/tail. Handsome first edition of this work for which Virgil Thomson composed the score -- considered groundbreaking in every respect including its all-black cast. Front jacket panel struggles to describe Stein's writing, finally settling politely for "strange and baffling prose cadences [that] provide a challenge to reader and publisher alike." Front flyleaf bears contemporary (dated 29 September 1934) nonauthorial gift inscription that quotes the opera's opening line ("To know to know to love her so") and another line from the first page ("A saint is one to be for two when three and you make five and two and cover"). A superb, bright copy in far better than average jacket.

STEIN, GERTRUDE. Four Saints In Three Acts. Random House, New York, 1934.

Price: US$800.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: A clean, bright and attractive copy of this first edition. Bound in original black cloth on boards, lettered in gilt on the spine. This is the libretto for Stein's opera which had music composed by Virgil Thompson. The premiere was held in Hartford, Connecticut in 1934. The jacket is very clean and bright with no chips though it is price-clipped. This copy is signed by Gertrude Stein on the front free endpaper. There is a very faint offset stain that does transit the last few letters of Stein's name. I could say there is a "Stein Stain" but that would be in poor taste. This remains a very attractive copy of an important work by Gertrude Stein, signed by her and in excellent condition. Near Fine / Very Good.
