McKnight Kauffer, printed in black, cream and grey; unclipped ($2.00). This is a true first-impression of the book, which is the only that bears the words "first American edition" on the verso of the title-leaf. As reported by Gallup in his bibliography of T.S. Eliot, "In the first impression, the margins of many pages were incorrect because of faulty impostition of the formes as a result of the use of unskilled war-time labour. The entire impression would have been destroyed except that it was necessary to meet the announced publication date in order to preserve copyright, and consequently 788 copies for review and other burposes were distributed before the corrected impression was ready." The rest were destroyed. The collection's first English edition would be published the following year by Faber & Faber. From the estate of Robert Cecil Bald (1901 -1965), an Australian scholar of English Literature, who moved to the US to teach at Cornell University in 1937 and was then a professor at the University of Chicago from 1952 to 1965.

ELIOT, T[homas]. S[tearns], 1888-1965. Four Quartets [comprising East Coker, Burnt Norton, The Dry Salvages, Little Gidding]. Harcourt, Brace, New York, 1943.

Price: US$4865.00 + shipping

Description: First Printing ("First American Edition" on copyright page) of the first single-volume edition of Eliot's wartime masterpiece (preceding the British edition by more than a year), in the first-issue dust jacket (with nine titles to back panel). Tall, slim 8vo: [8],39,[1]pp. Original black cloth, spine titled in gold; jacket printed in gray and black, priced $2. About Fine (lettering to spine occasionally rubbed); slight toning to jacket's spine panel, crown of spine nicked, else exceptionally well-preserved. Gallup A43. A total of 4,165 copies were printed, but 3,777 destroyed because the margins were incorrectly set, because of unskilled wartime labor. The remaining 788 copies, of which this is one, were issued as review copies and to preserve copyright. Collects four interrelated poems published separately over the previous three years. East Coker is the village in Somerset from which Eliot's ancestors departed for the New World, in 1669; Burnt Norton refers to the Gloucestershire manor house erected on the foundation of a house that burned to the ground in 17th century; The Dry Salvages is a group of rocks off Cape Ann, and so harks to the poet's New England roots, and Little Gidding is the manor in Huntingdonshire where Nicholas Ferrar founded an Anglican religious community in the mid-17th century. ELIOT, T. S.. Four Quartets.. New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1943, 1943.

Price: US$6500.84 + shipping

Description: First collected edition, first printing, one of 788 copies. Following Faber's individual wrappered issues of the four parts in 1940 and 1941, this American edition marks the first time the poems are published together under the title by which they are now known. It is also the first hardback edition. Two printings were produced prior to publication. The first printing constituted 4,165 copies, but the poor quality of the printing led to the publisher destroying all but 788, which were sent out to retain copyright while the work was reprinted. This copy has the relevant point for the first printing: "first American edition" printed on the title page verso. The relatively small number of copies of the first printing which survived means that the book is now scarce in any state, but especially so in such attractive condition. "Four Quartets (1943), as the suite of four poems was titled (Eliot at one point considered calling them the 'Kensington quartets'), for a time displaced The Waste Land as Eliot's most celebrated work. The British public responded especially to the topical references in the wartime poems and to the tone of Eliot's public meditation on a shared disaster" (ODNB). Gallup A43.a. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket, designed by E. McKnight Kauffer. Boston bookseller's ticket to front free endpaper. Top edge lightly foxed; dust jacket lightly toned, as usual, a couple of small marks, light creases to extremities, price intact: a near-fine copy in near-fine dust jacket.
