Eliot, T. S.. FOUR QUARTETS. Faber & Faber, London, 1960.

Price: US$5012.23 + shipping

Description: Pp. 54+[2](blank, colophon); narrow demy 8vo; qr. parchment with gilt rule, spine lettered in gilt, marbled papered boards; t.e.g., others uncut; within matching marbled papered slipcase, edges slightly rubbed; housed in a later custom made brown cloth wrap-around portfolio with ribbon pull and a matching brown cloth outer slipcase (a trifle marked) with gilt lettered black leather title label on spine; Faber & Faber, London, 1960. Edition limited to 290 numbered copies, signed by the author. Barr 63. Galllup A43c. *Printed by Giovanni Mardersteig on the handpress of the Officina Bodoni in Verona. From the collection of David Levine, Sydney, with his book label on the upper pastedown of the portfolio above the label of previous owner Kenneth A. Lohf (who was the Rare Book and Manuscript Library Director at Columbia University for 25 years). 'In the ninth impression (July 1952) of the Faber & Faber trade edition of Four Quartets, through an error at the printers the section number V for "Burnt Norton" was printed at the top of page 12 rather than in its proper place. This misprint was corrected in about half the impression (10,000 copies) by a cancel leaf (pp. 11-12). Unfortunately Giovanni Mardersteig set his edition from one of the incorrect copies and the final 5 lines of section IV of "Burnt Norton" consequently appear here as the first lines of section V. An "Erratum" slip, measuring 8.3 x 12.1 cm, was prepared but was not used, in deference to the printer's wishes' [Gallup p. 74]. According to Barr [p. 23], Eliot 'knowing the Officina Bodoni's high reputation', had said he had no need to see proofs of this edition.

ELIOT T.S.. Four Quartets. , 1960.

Price: US$6200.00 + shipping

Description: "ELIOT, T.S. The Four Quartets. London: Faber and Faber, (1960). Tall quarto, original cream and marbled paper boards, original marbled slipcase. $6200.Signed limited edition of this highspot of 20th-century poetry, number 102 of 290 copies signed by Eliot, beautifully printed at the Officina Bodoni in Verona. The Officina Bodini was founded in 1922 by Hans Mardersteig and named for Giambattista Bodoni, the great eighteenth-century Parma printer. In 1923 the Italian government granted the press the sole right to use the original Bodoni matrices housed in the Biblioteca Palatina. "Mardersteig's approach was closer to that of the early scholar printers like Aldus Manutius or Robert Estienne than to the dilettantes of the Arts and Crafts Movement; the result has been that Officina Bodoni books have a value far above their success as examples of fine printing: they are designed to be read." (Cave, 177). First published in four separate parts during World War II, The Four Quartets "were the first of Eliot's poems to reach a wide public (they were seen as a unifying force in the war years), and they succeeded in communicating in modern idiom the fundamentals of Christian faith and experience" (Drabble, 364). Fine condition."
