Description: Norman Douglas shares his experiences of early 20th century Tunisia in this travelogue A first edition of this travelogue of Tunisia, with 15 illustrations, collated and complete. Alongside captivating descriptions of Tunisian scenery, Douglas' 1912 travelogue also offers a window into colonial and imperial mindsets. Best known for his 1917 novel South Wind, British writer Norman Douglas was often involved in scandals and frequently fled Britain to escape prosecution for the various allegations of pederasty and sexual assault. Between 1916 and 1917, the British police charged Douglas for the sexual assault of 3 boys. According to Cecil Woolf's bibliography of Douglas there are 4 different bindings to the first edition. This is variant iii. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Only lightly rubbed to the rear board and the spine, a little worse to the front board. Lightly bumped to the head and tail of the spine with some minor wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Foxed to the front and rear of the book, with the occasional mark throughout. Very Good

Description: First Edition. Hardback. Large 8vo. pp 251. All 24 photographic illustrations present + frontis. Original publisher's blue cloth, gilt. Spine ends a very slightly bumped with miniscule tear to head; a few very slight marks. Very occasional scattered light foxing. An attractive copy, VG+. 1000 copies printed, with 260 shipped to the United States (Woolf, 'Bibliography of Norman Douglas', pp. 35-39). Woolf's binding ii, with blind stamping and no ornaments on the front cover, and author's name omitted at top but publisher's name at foot of spine. Woolf says that the fore edges were unopened: in this copy the fore edge has been opened fairly carefully, with bottom edge uncut. Very good indeed.
