Description: The copyright page helpfully notes that this hardback published in 1944 by Random House is 'First Printing'. Condition of book (there is no dust-jacket) is 'Very Good'. There is an inked presentation inscription on the front end-page, dated 1944. The front of the title page (but not its reverse) was printed yellow. There are 132 numbered pages. The size of the book in inches is 8.2 x 5.4 and it weighs 0.36 kg. The mainly dark blue covers are quarter bound in white cloth. Spine titles are in gilt. Pages are clean, tight and unmarked. The book's contents are as follows: - Pages 3 to 59 include are entitled 'The Sea and the Mirror A Commentary on Shakespeare's The Tempast'. Chapters I to II are in verse; Chapter III in prose. A near fine example of the book with light strip of toning to the head of spine ( corresponding with jacket chip ). Dust jacket very good with short chips to edges and a short tear to front fold at joint. W. H. Auden has crossed out his printed name and signed the title page underneath. He has also hand corrected the misprint on page 128, correcting looked to locked. Includes two long poems by Auden " For the Time Being - a Christmas Oratorio " and " The Sea and the Mirror - A Commentary on Shakespeare's The Tempest ".
