Description: Blue covers, white blocks on spine holding title and publisher, top edge blue as issued. A 1944 printing in a 2nd issue DJ with the photographers' name on back panel. The binding is tight, previous owners' period bookplate on inside front cover. Light corner rubbing, very light bumps to bottom front and bottom back covers. The DJ has moderate to heavy corner wear, approx. 1" from lower front flap fold, overall edge wear, rubbing along spine folds, a small triangular piece from upper back spine, rubbing and chipping to bottom of the spine. A flat crease to upper front and another to lower left front. The $2.75 is on the DJ flap and now it's protected in new archival sleeve.

Description: Cover is first edition design, blue full-cloth boards with printed red spine panels and author's stamped facsimile signature on front cover. Without blue inked top edge. Deckled pages. 1944 printing. Original copyright 1940. Second issue dust jacket with black-and-white photograph of Hemingway captioned below: "by Arnold--Sun Valley." Original $2.75 price on front panel. Very faint sunning along cover edges. Most unfortunate flaw is series of six very small perforations in cloth along front gutter, likely past insect damage.Narrow portion of top edge of ffep and inside front cover bears corresponding wavy dark stain of unknown origin; not dampstain. Otherwise clean, tight, and unworn in a lightly-to-moderately edgeworn and scuffed (along spine) dust jacket. With short closed tears and shallow chips mainly to upper and lower jacket edges. Jacket otherwise bright and colorful, now protected in mylar.
