Condition: Near Fine

Description: Undated-Copyright 1940 has J-4.66 [ Col] on copyright page-Tight, and unmarked- Clipped DJ with wear and tear on edges with tiny chip on upper spine-"In 1937 Ernest Hemingway traveled to Spain to cover the civil war there for the North American Newspaper Alliance. Three years later he completed the greatest novel to emerge from "the good fight," For Whom the Bell Tolls. The story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to an antifascist guerilla unit in the mountains of Spain, it tells of loyalty and courage, love and defeat, and the tragic death of an ideal. In his portrayal of Jordan's love for the beautiful Maria and his superb account of El Sordo's last stand, in his brilliant travesty of La Pasionaria and his unwillingness to believe in blind faith, Hemingway surpasses his achievement in The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms to create a work at once rare and beautiful, strong and brutal, compassionate, moving and wise. "If the function of a writer is to reveal reality," Maxwell Perkins wrote to Hemingway after reading the manuscript, "no one ever so completely performed it." Greater in power, broader in scope, and more intensely emotional than any of the author's previous works, it stands as one of the best war novels of all time."

Ernest Hemingway. FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS [First American edition - later printing]. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1940.

Price: US$83.74 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First American edition published by Charles Scribner's & Sons in 1940 - an early printing, but without the 'A' on the printer's page that would denote a first printing. ***Very good in oatmeal textured cloth-covered boards with black titles on a red background to the spine. The lettering is still clear but the red backing panel is rubbed and worn. Edges of boards just slightly rubbed. Head and tail of spine unworn. Corners slightly bumped. The cloth is still clean and unmarked. With rough-edged paper to the fore edge of the page block, as is usual with American editions. Internally the book is also very good. Interior pages clean. Some pages just lightly bumped at the top corner. With a contemporary inscription to the front free endpaper: 'Bessie Davies. From Cissie U.S.A. Sept: 22nd 48'. The binding is secure but there is some splitting to the fragile paper at the half-title page. No dustwrapper. [Please see scans]. 471 pages. 215mm x 145 mm. ***'This is the first full length novel that Hemingway has published since "A Farewell to Arms". It is worth waiting more than ten years for. The main theme is the same, that is, the novel is of war and love. ***It is a heroic and generous tale.' (Quote taken from the dustwrapper of a previously sold UK first edition). ***'For Whom the Bell Tolls tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American volunteer attached to a Republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As a dynamiter, he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia. It was published just after the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). It assumes the reader knows that the war was between the Second Spanish Republic government, supported by the Soviet Union, which many foreigners like Robert went to Spain to help, and a successful, Nationalist faction, supported by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. It was commonly viewed as the dress rehearsal for the Second World War. In 1940, the year the book was published, the United States had not yet entered the war, which had begun on 1st Sep 1939, with Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland. The novel is regarded as one of Hemingway's best works, along with The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, and The Old Man and the Sea. ***An early printing of the true first American edition in the original Scribner's binding. Identical in format with the first printing, except for the printer's page which does not have the printer's 'A' code present. Copies of the American edition from 1940 are difficult to find in the UK. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Ernest Hemingway. For Whom the Bell Tolls. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1940.

Price: US$85.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, second printing - lacking the "A" on the copyright page. The book measures approximately 9" x 6", with 471 numbered pages. Comes with a brand new facsimile (reproduction) dust jacket for protection and display. This book is in very good plus condition. Minor bumping on both ends of spine. Slight fading to lettering and design on spine. Small stain to the corner of the bottom edge of the textblock. Creasing to bottom corner of pages 49-55. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is one of Hemingway's biggest literary triumphs. Written in 1939 and finished in 1940, the first edition was published in October of that year, with a print run of 75,000 copies. The novel was inspired by Hemingway's experiences as a journalist in Spain during its civil war. The plot centers on an American dynamiter who joins forces with an anti-fascist troupe to carry out the detonation of a bridge. What unfolds is a story of bravery, deception, love, and agony. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is certainly one of Ernest Hemingway's greatest novels. Were it not for the war and politics of the time, this novel would have been the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in 1941 - as the jurors voted unanimously in favor of the award. Price: US$95.00 + shipping

Description: 8vo. Beige cloth with black spine lettering. 471pp. Very good. Spine a tad age toned and rubbed, else internally tight and near fine; lacks dust jacket. Tight, quite nice possible first edition, with "A" on copyright page -- but as even bibliographer C. Edgar Grissom notes in his "Ernest Hemingway: A Descriptive Bibliography" (2011), "Not surprisingly, I have discovered no way to separate the BOMC and Scribner's copies other than by jacket." Interestingly, tipped to blank leaf facing title page is a fine glossy 5" X 7" black-and-white photograph, a unique frontispiece: A modern (likely 1970s) print of a studio portrait from the 1945 Western drama "Saratoga Trunk" showing Ingrid Bergman and Gary Cooper -- stars of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" -- posed dramatically in a parlor setting in 1875 New Orleans; lower left corner bears a blue rubberstamped signature of Bergman.

Description: First edition, first printing - with the "A" on the copyright page. The book measures approximately 9" x 6", with 471 numbered pages. Minor sunning to spine. Minor scuffing and staining to top and bottom edges of textblock. Front hinge is cracked. Previous owner's book plate on front endpaper. Tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to an anti-fascist guerilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As an expert in the use of explosives, he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia. Told primarily through the thoughts and experiences of Robert Jordan, a character inspired by Hemingway's own experiences in the Spanish Civil War. Robert Jordan is an American who travels to Spain to oppose the fascist forces of Generalísimo Francisco Franco. A superior has ordered him to travel behind enemy lines and destroy a bridge, using the aid of a group of guerrillas who have been living in the mountains nearby. Robert Jordan encounters one of those in their camp, María, a young Spanish native whose life has been shattered by the outbreak of the war. His strong sense of duty clashes with both Republican leader Pablo's unwillingness to commit to a covert operation and his own joie de vivre that is kindled by his newfound love for María. The novel graphically describes the unutterable brutality of civil war. 471 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

Tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to an anti-fascist guerilla unit during the Spanish Civil War.
