Walter Crane .. Flora's Feast: A Masque of Flowers, Penned and Pictured by Walter Crane.. Cassell & Company, London, UK, 1889.

Price: US$185.00 + shipping

Description: First Edition (1889), unstated, but implied: no subsequent printings noted, according to Cassell & Company's customary practice at the time of publication. Good+ to Very Good-: Shows moderate use: shows moderate wear to the extremities and at the corner tips the underlying board has become exposed; mild rubbing to both panels and backstrip; faint overall soiling and smudging to the illustrated panels; the book was produced with the illustrated pages connected at the outside edges, leaving unillustrated pages between them; a previous owner has attempted to open the connection between pages three and four, resulting in jagged edges to the outer margins; the pages to pages 18 and 19 have been more carefully cut at the outside edge, while the rest of the pages have been left uncut (the former owner must have realized but this time that cutting the pages merely left blank - and unnumbered - pages between the illustrated ones); the binding remains square and secure; the text is clean. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome, lightly used copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing some wear and unobtrusive cosmetic flaws. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 4to. (10.15 x 7.6 x 0.4 inches). 40pp. + [8]pp. of ads. at rear. Beautiful colour lithographs to every page. Pictorial paper covered boards, with powder blue linen backstrip. Language: English. Weight: 16 ounces. Decorated endpapers. Hardback: Pastedown tritone Illustrated panels with powder blue cloth backstrip. Walter Crane (1845 -1915) is considered to be the most influential, and among the most prolific, children s book creators of his generation and, along with Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway, one of the strongest contributors to the child's nursery motif that the genre of English children's illustrated literature would exhibit in its developmental stages in the latter 19th century. Crane's work featured some of the more colourful and detailed beginnings of the child-in-the-garden motifs that would characterize many nursery rhymes and children's stories for decades to come. He was part of the Arts and Crafts movement and produced an array of paintings, illustrations, children's books, ceramic tiles and other decorative arts. First Edition (1889), unstated, but implied: no subsequent printings noted, according to Cassell & Company's customary practice at the time of publication.

Walter Crane. Flora's Feast, A Masque of Flowers. Cassell & Company, 1889.

Price: US$250.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Flora's Feast, A Masque of Flowers was penned & pictures by Walter Crane and published by Cassell & Company, Limited, perhaps as early as 1889, and appears to be a First Edition, though it's not stated as such. Though it's an ex-library copy, it's a beautiful book, in very good + condition but for some library markings. The book spent its years at the library in the Memorial Room, where people looked . . . and did not check out, hence there's little wear. The book has red cloth boards and is 7 3/8" by 10" with 40 pages almost all of which are "single-sided but connected". (I can email you a photograph if you're unsure of what I mean.) I've read that the pages are "japanned leaves." It's quite simply a beautifully done book of verses and illustrations. Thank you!
