Limited to 275 numbered copies signed by Hoyem with the introduction signed by Bradbury. The seventh production of the press, this volume is illustrated with fourteen line drawings and ten diecuts by Andrew Hoyem with watercolors added by hand. The press's description calls this "A satire about a two-dimensional world vexed by single- and multi-dimensionality that has been continuously in print since first published in 1884, enjoyed by young students of geometry and sophisticated physicists alike, and hailed as a precursor of science fiction. Andrew Hoyem's radical design and illustrations realize many implications of the book, such as: the "volume" can be opened out flat to form a thirty-foot plane; the plane-geometrical citizens of Flatland are infinitely thin (holes in paper); they cast shadows; their edges glow." Description: LETTERS are both on half-sheet Arion Press stationery: the first is dated 16 May 1988 and reads in part, "Congratulations on your retirement! Now you will have more time for your bookish pursuits. My own set of summer whites was retired in 1960 when I was released as a [Lieutenant Sergeant]. Nevertheless I'll salute you ."; the second is dated 9 February 1992 and reads in part, "Though I admire Robinson Jeffers' poetry and have mulled over what we could do for it, the treatments he has received from the Grabhorn Press and Wm. Everson seem to preclude Arion from taking him up." CHRISTMAS GREETINGS are for 1985, 1987, 1991, as well as a more lavish "Season's Greetings" for 1985 introducing plans for BIRDS OF THE PACIFIC SLOPE by Andrew Jackson Grayson. Description: One of the imaginative wonders of 20th Century Fine Press bookmaking. This elaborate 1980 rendering by the Arion Press of a late-19th century science fiction novel by English schoolmaster Edwin Abbott (who published pseudonymously under the name: "Square") relates the story of a square living in a two-dimensional world who visits a world of lines, another comprised of just a single dot, and is in turn visited by a three-dimensional sphere. The book is a two-sided accordion-style binding encased in aluminum boards that unfold as one 33-foot long text, then recoil to slide back into an elegantly configured latched aluminum-tooled frame. It is illustrated with hand-colored die-cutouts by Arion Press founder Andrew Hoyem and contains a signed Introductory Essay by science fiction titan Ray Bradbury.
